Tuolumne Utilities District

Tuolumne Utilities District Tuolumne Utilities District was created in July 1992, following approval by Tuolumne County voters to consolidate two existing water agencies.

TUD Mission:
Provide Responsible Water and Wastewater Services for our Customers with Great Customer Service in a Socially, Financially and Environmentally Responsible Manner at a fair value. TUD oversees water delivery and water treatment for most Tuolumne County communities and operates the county's largest wastewater treatment system. WATER

Tuolumne Utilities District relies on the Sierra snow

pack for its water supply, fed to reservoirs by the South Fork Stanislaus River. The most important watershed for the District is the area above Pinecrest Lake. This watershed flow comes from snowpack that melts and fills the reservoir for water supply throughout the year. Pinecrest Lake and Lyons Reservoir are part of two hydro-electric power generation facilities owned, maintained and operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). In an agreement with PG&E, TUD receives its water supply from Lyons Reservoir through the 15.7 mile Main Canal. 95% of the water used by TUD customers comes from this stored water supply and is then fed through TUD’s ditch system. TUD has 14 water treatment plants in various locations throughout the County. Most of these treatment plants were acquired when previous water agency providers could not meet State drinking water requirements. The District provides water to about 14,000 water connections or a population of 35,000, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. SEWER

TUD’s wastewater system serves over 12,030 single family equivalent sewer connections and treats 1.8 million gallons of sewage daily at the Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Sonora.

Where does your wastewater go? 💧

Ever wondered what happens after water goes down the drain?

At Tuolumne Utilities District, all wastewater from homes and businesses flows to our regional treatment facility, where it is carefully treated to meet strict State of California standards.

But here’s the part many people don’t realize—we don’t just dispose of it… we reuse it.

Instead of discharging treated water into rivers or streams, TUD captures this highly treated water and puts it to work right here in our community.
✅ Stored safely in reservoirs
✅ Tested and treated to meet rigorous requirements
✅ Delivered for irrigation on approved agricultural lands

That reclaimed water helps irrigate local pastures—supporting agriculture, keeping open space green, and reducing demand on our drinking water supplies.

In fact, those lush green fields you see around Jamestown?
That’s recycled water at work. 🌱

This process protects our environment, supports our local economy, and ensures we’re using our water resources responsibly—today and into the future.

It’s not waste—it’s a resource!
