Protection Engine Company #1 Protection Fire Company 1, known as Engine 6, is one of the five companies that comprise the city of the South Amboy's Fire Department. David Quinlan Sr.

Protection Engine Co #1 was organized on Friday evening November 28th 1890. Our records show that the first meeting held at Welsh hall 200 block of First St. shows William Birmingham (President) Tobias Grace (Vice President) John J. (Trustee's). The first apparatus purchased was housed at The Welsh Family's barn on First St. In 1892 the company was given its first quarters at Feltus and Augusta Street's. In 1929 its current quarters was erected approx 500 feet away from original firehouse on corners of Feltus and David Street's. The steam engine in 1892 was pulled by any available team of horses that could be harnessed. Records show the team pulling the steam engine were that of Mr. The companies 1892 steam engine was accredited for helping to saving the business district in the City of Perth Amboy which was known to many as the Five Corners around the turn of the century. The steam engine was transported to Perth Amboy via the Raritan Rivier Railroad on a flat cart. The year of 1924 began the long standing history for Protection with operating the iconic Mack Fire Apparatus. 1924 the company obtained a Mack Bulldog Chain Driven model pumper, after 30 years of respected service it was retired. 1954 brought the Mack B-85 Thermodyne 750 G.P.M. pumper with a 250 gallon booster tank. 20 years later brought in the reign of the 1974 Mack CF600 1,000 G.P.M diesel powered pumper with 750 gallon booster tank. Currently the company operates a 2000 Mack/Swab on an MR cab-chasis 1,500 G.P.M. with 700 gallon water and 50 gallon foam cell. Distinguished members of Protection Engine Co. #1
