Please join us in congratulating Charles “Darin” Whitehead on his retirement following 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Apopka!

Darin began his career with the City in August 2002 as an Operator Trainee and concludes his service today as a Class A Water Plant Operator. Throughout his entire career, he has worked in Water Operations, helping ensure safe, reliable water for Apopka residents.

Known affectionately by his coworkers as “The Professor,” Darin always had an explanation, a solution and the knowledge to help fix just about anything. His experience and commitment to service have made a lasting impact on both his colleagues and our community.

Mayor Nick Nesta and City staff were honored to share a retirement lunch with “The Professor” and celebrate his remarkable career.

Thank you, Darin, for your many years of service to Apopka. We wish you a happy, healthy and well-deserved retirement!

Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated 144 years of Apopka with us!

Statement on Automated License Plate Readers:

The Apopka Police Department (APD) will comply with all applicable requirements of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regarding Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) equipment located within the right-of-way of the State Highway System within the time required by law.

ALPR technology has been a valuable law enforcement tool for APD. It has assisted officers and investigators in identifying vehicles associated with criminal activity, recovering stolen vehicles, locating wanted/missing persons, and apprehending individuals involved in serious crimes.

The department maintains strict policies governing the use of ALPRs as follows:

- ALPR data is retained for 30 days, unless information is lawfully preserved in connection with an authorized criminal investigation or as otherwise required by law.
- Officers must have a legitimate law enforcement purpose to access or search ALPR data. Searches must be associated with and documented by an official case number or other authorized law enforcement investigation.
- Quarterly audits are conducted to review system activity and ensure searches and access are consistent with Department policy and legitimate law enforcement purposes.
- Administrative reviews are conducted to monitor authorized users, system access, information-sharing practices, and compliance with Department policy.
- Access to ALPR information is limited to authorized personnel for legitimate law enforcement purposes.

Misuse of the ALPR database, or any other law enforcement systems, technology, or investigative tool, is strictly prohibited. Any employee found to have accessed or used these resources for an unauthorized, improper, or personal purpose is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination, consistent with Department policy and law.

Apopka Police Department will continuously monitor the use of ALPR technology, system access, data-sharing practices, changes in Florida law and regulatory requirements, and evolving law enforcement best practices to ensure we continue serving the best interests of public safety.
