Milling and paving is underway on Colfax Avenue between the East Bank Trail and Eddy Street. The street remains open but is restricted in the construction zone. Paving is expected to be complete by the end of the day, Thursday, August 27, weather permitting. Following pavement striping, Colfax Avenue between Niles Avenue and Eddy Street will reopen to full traffic by Tuesday, September 1.
Work on the Gintz Drive approach, located just west of Stephenson Mills Apartments, is also scheduled to be completed this week. Once that work is finished, the Colfax Avenue Streetscape Project will move into Phase Two, with construction occurring between Sycamore Street and Gintz Drive. During Phase Two, access to Stephenson Mills Apartments and The Cascades will be maintained from the east. Phase Two is expected to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.
The Colfax Avenue improvements include a new multi-purpose path, new traffic signals, new sidewalks, raised intersections at Niles Avenue and Sycamore Street, a raised crossing at the East Race Trail, decorative lighting and trees.
In a separate project starting Monday, August 31, St. Joseph County plans to rebuild the Colfax Avenue bridge over the St. Joseph River and the intersection at Colfax Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
