Dismas House of Indiana Dismas House fosters healing, belonging, and self-determination for individuals returning from incarceration. Mary's and Holy Cross students.

We work to reduce recidivism and address systemic barriers through compassionate, community-driven care and meaningful connections. Did you know?
--> 67.5% of inmates are rearrested within 3 years of release
--> Up to one-quarter of prisoners expect to go to a homeless shelter upon release
--> One in every 100 adults in the United States is currently behind bars. The US incarcerates more people than all other nations, including China, with over 2.3 individuals currently held by our penal system.
--> Dismas cuts national rates of re-offending in half
--> In 2006, 75% of our residents successfully completed the 90-day program
--> Almost half of our budget comes from individual donations

Since opening in August of 1986, Dismas of South Bend has provided a new beginning to over 1500 former prisoners. Dismas has also been home to 150 local Notre Dame, St. Founded in 1974 by Vanderbilt University Chaplain Fr. Jack Hickey, the Dismas organization is comprised of three houses - the original in Nashville - and is nationally recognized as an effective crime prevention program. The name “Dismas” originates from the “repentant thief,” who was crucified at Calvary with Jesus Christ and offers a testament to the power of forgiveness.

Today marked the final day of our Leadership Cohort, and we couldn't be more proud of everyone who participated!

Throughout the cohort, these individuals showed up, challenged themselves, shared their experiences, and continued building the skills and confidence to lead in their own lives and communities.

Leadership isn't just about having a title. It's about growth, accountability, finding your voice, and recognizing the difference you can make.

To each of our participants, CONGRATULATIONS! 👏 Your dedication, hard work, and willingness to grow deserve to be celebrated!

We’re officially just one week away from The Road Home Challenge!

As we head into the final week, meet the last obstacle on the course: Tire Run & Hurdle Series. Participants will navigate tires and hurdles that require agility, focus, and one important thing—keep moving forward.

For people returning home after incarceration, the journey can mean navigating obstacle after obstacle. Some are expected. Others show up without warning. But each step forward is progress.

The finish line doesn’t mean the journey is over. It represents how far someone has come and all the possibilities still ahead. The road home isn’t always easy, but it’s worth taking together.

What does it really take to come home?

For someone returning home after incarceration, reentry can mean trying to manage employment, housing, transportation, supervision, family responsibilities, and so much more, all at the same time.

On Saturday, November 21, we invite you to experience just a small glimpse of those challenges through our Reentry Simulator.

During one afternoon, participants will navigate four simulated weeks of reentry and face some of the difficult decisions that individuals returning home are asked to make every day.

But the conversation doesn’t stop with the simulation.

You’ll also have the opportunity to hear directly from people who have experienced reentry themselves and learn more about what coming home can really look like in our community.

Together, we’ll explore money management, budgeting with the resources you have, understanding banking and credit, and planning for what comes next.

The Rope Climb challenges participants to keep pulling, keep reaching, and keep working their way toward the top.

For people returning home after incarceration, building a new life can feel like a climb too. Finding employment, pursuing education, rebuilding relationships, maintaining recovery, and working toward personal goals all take time and effort.

And progress isn’t measured only by reaching the top. It’s every step forward, every accomplishment, and every decision to keep climbing, even when the journey gets difficult.

On October 17, come take on the Rope Climb and experience how each obstacle in The Road Home Challenge represents a different part of the reentry journey.

Looking for something positive for your child to do tonight? Kids Connect meets tonight at the Dismas Hub! This group gives children a welcoming space to have fun, build connections, and learn skills they can use every day.

And don’t forget about our new monthly incentive! Families can earn a sticker each week they participate, and those who complete all four weeks, including our Parent & Child Group on the fourth Tuesday, will receive a gift card.

Yesterday, our community came together to bless our new Dismas Transitional Home before its first residents walk through the doors.

Throughout the afternoon, guests moved through the home, pausing in each space to reflect, pray, and offer intentions for the individuals who will soon call this place home.

These rooms may be empty right now, but yesterday they were filled with hope, love, prayer, and the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity for a new beginning.

We ended our time together in shared prayer, asking for this home and every person who enters it to be surrounded by peace, strength, compassion, and community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for such a meaningful afternoon and helped us begin this next chapter with intention.

This is more than a house. It’s a place for new beginnings. 🏠

🎃 What an AMAZING Halloween at the Hub! 👻🧡

Yesterday’s Trunk or Treat was filled with costumes, candy, pumpkins, laughter, and so many families spending time together. Seeing the Hub full of kids having fun and families making memories was exactly what we hoped for!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who decorated a trunk, donated candy, volunteered, helped behind the scenes, and came out to celebrate with us. Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the support of our staff, volunteers, community partners, and everyone who continues to show up for Dismas families.

We had such a great time with all of you, and we’re excited to keep creating more opportunities for families to connect, have fun, and learn about the support available at the Dismas Hub.

Thank you for making Halloween at the Hub such a success! 🎃🍬🧡
