The Old Berwick Historical Society promotes public awareness of and appreciation for local and regional history through a variety of activities that explore, preserve, interpret, and celebrate the past, and through stewardship of the Counting House and its collections. We serve history lovers from all over the country, especially

Seacoast New Hampshire and Southern York County, Maine. The Counting House Museum is a regional treasure containing one of northern New England’s last textile mill ballrooms. Home of the Old Berwick Historical Society, it is a repository for documents, photographs and historic curiosities covering a wide spectrum of community life in and around the Berwicks, site of the first permanent settlement in Maine.

The Counting House will be open this summer on Sunday afternoons and it’s a fantastic place to do some shopping for yourself or for the history buff in your life! We have books on South Berwick, local history, fiction by Sarah Orne Jewett, reproductions of historic town maps, and other items! These make great birthday gifts, or welcome gifts to that new person who just moved into your neighborhood, or for (dare we say it) Christmas!

Our friends at the Association of Rollinsford’s Culture and History (ARCH) have been doing an archaeological dig this past week and are uncovering some interesting mysteries. Want to learn more? The dig is occurring next week too and tours are offered each day at 1 pm. Dr. Tad Emerson Baker and Dr. Alix Martin are always happy to have you stop by between 9 am and 4 pm if the 1 pm tour time does not fit your schedule! Remember, the dig is occurring on private land and should not be visited when the archaeological field school is not in session!
