🌾 Happy National Prairie Day! 🌾
Prairies are unique grassland ecosystems characterized by open landscapes filled with native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and other plants. While often overlooked, prairies provide incredible benefits for both people and wildlife.
Why are prairies important?
◾ Carbon Storage – Prairie plants store large amounts of carbon deep within their extensive root systems, making them effective and resilient carbon sinks.
🌊 Flood & Erosion Control – Dense, fibrous roots help hold soil in place, reduce erosion, and improve the ground’s ability to absorb and retain water.
🐝 Pollinator Support & Biodiversity – Prairies provide critical habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, supporting healthy and diverse ecosystems.
💧 Water Filtration – Native vegetation naturally filters stormwater runoff, helping keep sediment, fertilizers, and other pollutants out of streams and waterways.
