The land we walk on everyday has many stories to tell and at The South Boston - Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History and the L. E. Coleman African-American Museum you can discover many of those stories.
On this International Museum Day, we celebrate the storytellers here in our own little historic corner of the world. The ones telling the stories of our communities and the people that got us here.
Including a river crossing that was a turning point in a war that began our country's grand democratic experiment or learn all about the deep roots and contributions of the African-American communities here in the county and the historic schools that helped change the fabric of the families who called this county home.
The South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History is operated for the collection, exhibition, and preservation of antiques, works of art, books, and physical items which are historically significant to the past, present and future heritage of South Boston, Halifax County and nearby counties.

The L. E. Coleman African American Museum began its life as Mountain Road School No. 1, built around 1919 for Black students in the Halifax, VA, community. Following the closing of the school, the building was used for a variety of purposes before it was remodeled and opened to the public as the L.E. Coleman African American Museum in 2005. Its mission is “to research, collect, and preserve the art, history, and culture of African Americans with emphasis on Halifax County, and to foster among people the awareness and perspective from the past and find purpose for the future.”
