The Chittenden County Sheriff’s Office would like to welcome everyone to construction season in Vermont. With warmer weather comes the familiar sight of work zones — and the risks that come with them. Daily shifts in traffic patterns, slow‑moving vehicles, roadside workers, and heavy equipment create conditions where crashes, injuries, and fatalities can happen in an instant.

You can help prevent them.

· Plan ahead — Most construction delays are posted well in advance on advisory boards and traffic alerts. A few extra minutes of planning can save a lot of stress.

· Slow down — Reduced speeds aren’t a suggestion; they’re there to protect you and the people working just feet away.

· Stay focused — Put the phone down. Keep your eyes on the road and your attention on the changing environment around you.

· Know the consequences — Vermont imposes enhanced fines for speeding or using a cellphone in work zones.

Everyone on the road has somewhere to be. And the people repairing and improving our highways want to make it home to their families at the end of the day.

The annual “kick-off” press event for the Vermont Buckle-Up Campaign was held at Crown Point, New York with support from the Vermont and New York Highway Safety Offices. This coincides with NHTSA’s National Click-it-or-Ticket Occupant Protection Campaign and the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.

The event was attended by various highway safety and law enforcement representatives from both states. Speakers reminded drivers of the importance of wearing seatbelts – every occupant, every time.

In addition, Bennington Police came with a grill and their “Copsicle” truck, and high school students from Vermont and New York participated in a friendly “Battle of the Belts,” competition - a fun, timed event to demonstrate how quick and easy it is to buckle your seat belt.

With increased traffic this holiday weekend, motorist can expect law enforcement officers to be enforcing seat belt laws. Please Buckle Up!

The Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies offer free and convenient car seat inspections by Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. This is a great way to ensure your child’s seat is a proper fit, and properly installed. Contact the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department or your local Car Seat Assistance Station for more information. To find a Car Seat Assistance Station near you please https://beseatsmart.org
