The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) serves Chittenden County, VT. We provide information, resources & services to help our community prevent and reduce the volume and toxicity of their waste. In addition, we own and/or operate a variety of facilities that collect & manage:

We do not pick up trash or recycling from households or businesses.

If you have old electronics to get rid of, don’t toss them in the trash! 💻♻️

Vermont’s E-Cycles program makes it ✨free✨ to recycle many common electronics year-round at participating collection locations.

✅ Free to recycle:
• Computers & Laptops
• Computer peripherals – mouse, keyboard, scanners, etc.
• Desktop printers (includes desktop 3D printers)
• Modems
• Monitors
• Smart board
• Televisions (all kinds)
• Circuit boards/mother boards

✅ Items accepted for no fee (limit 2 per day)
• Cameras
• Chargers & Cords
• GPS Units
• Headphones
• MP3 Player, IPod

📱 What about other electronics?
Many other electronic devices (like cell phones, game consoles, DVD players, radios, fax machines, and more) are also banned from the landfill in Vermont, but aren’t covered by the free E-Cycles program and may have a fee for recycling.

👀 Check CSWD’s A–Z List before you drop off any electronics to find out if it’s free, where to take it, and whether any fees apply.

The school year is here and CSWD is ready to help Chittenden County schools start the year off sustainably! 🎒✏️♻️ From classroom lessons and hands-on activities to facility tours, staff training, and technical assistance, CSWD offers free resources and support to PreK–college schools throughout the county.

We had a great time welcoming community members to our Organics Recycling Facility for our compost workshop this past weekend! Participants learned how food scraps are transformed into compost, got an inside look at our facility, and picked up tips for composting at home.

CSWD is hiring! 📢

We’re looking for people who want to help build a more sustainable Chittenden County. ♻️ We currently have three openings on our team:

🔧 Mechanic & Heavy Equipment Operator — Put your mechanical skills to work maintaining and operating equipment at our compost operation. $30–$35/hour

♻️ Drop-Off Center Operator — Help customers navigate recycling and disposal at our busy Drop-Off Centers. $22.18/hour | Tuesday–Saturday

🌱 Community & Events Outreach Coordinator — Connect with residents, businesses, organizations, and event planners to help reduce waste and increase recycling and composting. $28.02/hour

All three positions come with excellent benefits, and you’ll be part of a team working every day to make a difference in our community. 💚

📅 The Outreach Coordinator position is open through September 4. The other positions are open until filled.

Before you hit the stores, take stock of what you already have, check out thrift and reuse options, choose products made with recycled materials, and avoid overbuying.

Hosting an Airbnb or short-term rental? Help your guests recycle and compost right! 🏡♻️🌱

Most visitors want to do the right thing, but might need a little guidance. Posting recycling and food scrap signs in your kitchen (and having clearly marked bins) can help reduce contamination, keep recyclables clean, and make it easy for guests to sort their waste correctly.
