The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) serves Chittenden County, VT. We provide information, resources & services to help our community prevent and reduce the volume and toxicity of their waste. In addition, we own and/or operate a variety of facilities that collect & manage:

We’re hiring: Mechanic & Heavy Equipment Operator — Compost Program 🚜🔧

Join CSWD in a hands‑on dual role: spend part of your week diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing equipment, and the rest safely operating heavy machinery to support daily compost operations.

What we’re looking for:
• Minimum 2 years mechanical equipment repair
• Minimum 2 years heavy equipment operation
• Strong safety focus and practical problem‑solving

Pay: $30–$35/hr (dependent on experience & certifications) + excellent benefits, including generous paid time off.

Starting July 1: a $1 facility fee per vehicle at all CSWD Drop‑Off Centers. Yard & leaf waste pricing updates: $1 per cubic yard (up to 2 cubic yards).

With warmer spring weather, you may be cleaning out your closet and getting rid of old clothing. ☀️👕

Before tossing old clothes, keep textiles out of the trash! Bring your clean and dry clothing, footwear, sheets, towels, and accessories (in any condition) to any CSWD Drop-Off Center for textile recycling and reuse.

✅ No fee
✅ Bring items in closed 33-gallon bags or smaller
✅ Limit: 1 cubic yard per day

Just place your bags in the designated Apparel Impact containers at our facilities and give your unwanted items a second life ♻️👚

✅ Bring shredded paper to any of CSWD’s 6 Drop-Off Centers.

💡Here's your guide on how to dispose of light bulbs!

✅🗑️ Trash: Halogen, incandescent, LED, and infrared bulbs do not contain hazardous materials and can go in your regular household trash.

⚠️ Keep mercury-containing bulbs OUT of the landfill and blue-bin recycling! These should be brought to a CSWD Drop-Off Center or the Environmental Depot (by appointment only) for proper disposal.
We accept up to 10 per day of the following mercury-containing bulbs at any Drop-Off Center:
💡 Fluorescent tubes
💡 Circulines
💡 High-Intensity Discharge (HID)
💡 Mercury V***r
💡 U-Tube
To dispose of larger quantities, schedule an appointment at the Environmental Depot.
