Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square Advancing Healthy Homes, Caring Communities & Positive Aging since 1977 We currently have more than 800 people on waiting lists for our properties.

More than 1,200 Vermonters live in Cathedral Square independent, shared or assisted-living homes. In 2017 we created Vermont’s first affordable memory-care residence, which serves Medicaid recipients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. As a leading advocate for a system that better serves the long-term care needs of Vermonters, Cathedral Square created and administers the statewide Suppo

rt and Services at Home (SASH) program. SASH is a partnership among regional affordable-housing organizations, agencies on aging, hospitals and providers of home health, mental health and primary care services. Working together under the SASH umbrella, these organizations coordinate care and support for Vermonters throughout the state so they can remain living at home independently. SASH was piloted in 2009 and went statewide in 2011 as part of the “Vermont Blueprint for Health” reform initiative and today receives funding through OneCare Vermont. Focusing on wellness, prevention and care management, SASH has been documented to save Medicare expenses, provide better access to care, and improve participants’ health and overall quality life. SASH is a platform for telemedicine and other health-care innovations and is being replicated in other states.

What a way to spend an afternoon! Residents, day respite participants, staff, and volunteers at our Memory Care at Allen Brook community teed off this week for a mini golf tournament from Mini Golf of Vermont, who brought a full 9-hole portable course right to our backyard. The sunshine was perfect, the competition was friendly, and a great time was had by all.

May is Older Americans Month, and we're celebrating with a look back at the heart of what SASH Vermont is all about. We are also celebrating 15 years of SASH this year! This video from our archives captures participants sharing, in their own words, what SASH means to them. Hope. Home. Life. Community. Thank you to every participant, coordinator, and community partner who has helped make SASH what it is today. Just imagine what we will accomplish in the next 15 years!

This Nurses Week, we're celebrating the dedicated nurses across our communities, including our SASH Vermont wellness nurses serving communities statewide and the nursing teams at Cathedral Square Assisted Living and Memory Care at Allen Brook.

Whether supporting older Vermonters aging in place or providing daily care for residents in our assisted living communities, our nurses bring skill, compassion, and commitment to everything they do and we are so grateful.

Thank you to each and every one of you. We're so proud to work alongside you. 💚
Happy Nurses Week!

Big news from St. Albans! Reid Commons has been recognized with Efficiency Vermont's Best of the Best Performance Excellence Award for Residential New Construction in the Multifamily Homes category, awarded last week at the Better Building by Design conference.

Reid Commons is Cathedral Square's first fossil fuel-free building, with a geothermal heating and cooling system, triple-pane windows, and a rooftop solar array. More than that, it's a place 33 older adults now call home. Six of those residents came directly from homelessness, on a brownfield site the city worked to remediate for over 16 years.

This recognition belongs to the whole team, including our partners at Duncan Wisniewski Architecture, ReArch Construction, Engineering Services of Vermont, Green Mountain Enclosure Consulting, and Evernorth Energy Services.

Last night, we celebrated our volunteers! This special group of people choose to give their free time, talents, and expertise to enrich the lives of our residents. Musicians, gardeners, artists, and so many others who simply care about helping other people.

We heard from each volunteer about what they love most about being here, and one theme kept coming up: they feel they receive more than they give. We are so grateful for this community! And we're grateful to the sponsors who made last night's celebration possible: Jersey Mike's Subs, Costco, Hannaford Supermarkets, The Jones Farm- Dairy Cows and Vermont Maple Syrup, Price Chopper, City Market, and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Thayer House was thrilled to welcome two UVM Public Health interns this semester, Emmy Bassler and Sam Lincoln. For their Capstone project, they explored "Loneliness and Social Isolation in Older Adults: A Community-Based Intervention" right here in our community.

Residents loved sharing their stories through journaling and person-centered interviews, and had a blast with Wii Bowling League and a Cooking Dessert for One class.

We're proud to be four years into this partnership with The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont, and we can't wait to see what Emmy and Sam do next. You'll be missed!
