The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

Public Works crews recently completed a stormwater infrastructure upgrade at Calhoun Street and Yale Road. The project included replacing an old, damaged corrugated metal pipe (CMP) with a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, improving drainage capacity and reliability for the area. These improvements help ensure better stormwater flow and reduce the risk of drainage issues during heavy rainfall.

The Melodie Park Stormwater Pond Project continues to move forward! Last week, the City Council approved the construction of a deck to surround a portion of the pond. This deck will provide new opportunities for residents to enjoy the park. The project not only improves stormwater management but also adds a new amenity for residents to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors.

The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

Community Development Director Josh McEnany and staff attended the annual pre-hurricane coordination meeting with the City’s debris removal contractor and monitoring firm. While we hope their services won’t be needed this season, staff and our contractors are prepared and ready to respond if necessary.

The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

During recent overnight storms, our SCADA system alerted Public Works staff to an issue at the Sherwood Forest Stormwater Pump Station. When the crew arrived to investigate, they discovered a piece of log debris affecting pump operations.

They quickly removed the obstruction and confirmed the pump system was working properly.

We are compiling a current callout list for this Hurricane season. If you would like to be included please send an email to [email protected]. Include a good phone number and any team related skills you are able to perform ie Jeep/Truck operation, first aid, chainsaw operation, searches, damage assessment etc.

The City is committed to enhancing its stormwater system to better manage flooding events.

The Lantern Park Pond project, funded through the CDBG-DR program, has officially moved to the next phase.

Volusia County has completed the purchase of the property, and the construction bid package is expected to be released soon. This important stormwater improvement project will help strengthen drainage capacity and reduce flooding impacts in Lantern Park.

To mark this milestone, the Public Works Department even knocked over the first tree to celebrate.

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season just started, but Florida is dedicated to disaster preparedness all year round. We always plan for the worst that nature can throw at us, and we execute those plans to ensure effective response, recovery, and restoration. 

I encourage all Florida residents and visitors to have a household plan for hurricane season that considers the needs of children, seniors, and pets in their family. Disaster preparedness essentials—including many pet items—are now tax-free in Florida.
