Comfort Zone Homes of South Deerfield MA announced today that it now offers six super-insulated/green home designs that range in size from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet. The designs also range in style, including: arts & crafts, colonial, contemporary, and cottage. Three of the designs are single story dwellings.

2 Easy Steps to “Energy Independence”

Step 1: All six designs will be built with the Comfort Zone Homes wall system which includes a 6 ½ inch thick layer of exterior foam insulation and an air/vapor barrier that surrounds the entire structure. They will also be built with a whole house mechanical ventilation system and with materials that have no or low volatile organic compounds.

The benefits of living in a home built in this manner are:

1. Significantly reduced heating and cooling costs than a traditionally built house.
2. A very comfortable and healthy indoor environment for your family.

Step 2: When built on a site with suitable access to direct sunlight, each home can take advantage of our “Energy Independence Upgrade.” The upgrade simply involves purchasing a solar (PV) electric system. The sustainable energy created by the solar system can be enough to operate all of the homes operating systems, including heat, a/c, domestic hot water, appliances and lighting. The result is a home that can operate annually without energy bills.

The homeowner can implement step two at any time after the house has been built. “There are many occasions when homeowners need time to replenish their bank accounts before they can economically move on to step two” said Chris Cappello of Comfort Zone Homes. “With our approach, their house will be ready when they are”.

Trends

Baby boomers are currently experiencing a shift in their housing needs. Couples today are finding themselves living alone in large two story homes that they raised their families in. With high maintenance costs and too much house to care for, these same boomers are electing to downsize into more energy efficient single story homes. These new homes offer very low maintenance costs and the single story floor plans offer the opportunity to age in place.

“With our three new single story designs, Comfort Zone Homes is making a commitment to serve the shifting baby boomer market. We are also focusing on serving younger couples and families who want to live in a more sustainable way” said Cappello.

“The beauty of all our designs is that by looking at them, you can’t tell that they are energy efficient homes. They all look like they belong in Western New England. We’ve been saying all along, that when living a sustainable lifestyle, we want you to step into your comfort zone.”

A poignant 2 minute excerpt from last weeks episode of America revealed on PBS. This video clip examines heat loss in homes through the lens of a plane-mounted infrared camera. Energy use in homes and offices now exceeds that of industry.

Comfort Zone Homes has a solution to this problem. A super-insulated home built by us, will not register in these pictures.

Chris had a great time meeting employees of Pratt & Whitney at their Earth Day Fair today in East Hartford CT. Comfort Zone Homes was one of 40 sustainable products companies and the only green builder invited to participate in the event.

There was a buzz at the event as the State of Connecticut recently reestablished and funded their residential solar rebate program. When coupled with the Federal tax credit, small residential installations in the state can qualify for up to 60% savings off of the total price. These incentives help drive down the cost of building an energy independent home.

Engineers at Pratt & Whitney were impressed with the effectiveness and building simplicity of the Comfort Zone Homes super-insulated wall system.
