Silver Thread Scenic Byway The Silver Thread Scenic Byway follows State Hwy 149 from South Fork at the southern end through Creede, Lake City and ends at US Hwy.50 just west of Gunnison.

One of the most unique stops along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway is Wheeler Geologic Area. Tucked deep into the San Juan Mountains, those willing to make the journey will be met with towering volcanic ash formations, dramatic spires, and one of Colorado’s most unique landscapes.

It stands watch over the upper Rio Grande Valley and its distinctive summit is a familiar landmark and a favorite photo stop for those driving through.

Lake San Cristobal is more than just Colorado’s second-largest natural lake - it’s the result of one of the state’s most fascinating geological events. Formed when the massive Slumgullion Earthflow dammed the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, the lake has been reflecting mountain peaks and blue skies ever since.

Take the short walk to this overlook for a bird’s-eye view of the lake and the visible sediment deposits left behind by the ancient slide. Fun fact: the lake was named after a poem by Lord Tennyson, who wrote about a beautiful Scottish lake called “Cristobal.”

One more reason to slow down and explore the Silver Thread Scenic Byway. 💙🏔️
