Good information!
If you suspect an at risk, Animal contact your local police department and ask for their humane law-enforcement officer.

☀️ Would you leave a child outside in 90° heat without shade or water?
🐕 A dog is no different.

⚖️ In New Jersey, leaving a dog outside in extreme heat without proper shade and continuous access to clean water may constitute animal cruelty under N.J.S.A. 4:22-17.2 and 4:22-17.5.

⚠️ Temperature alone is NOT the only factor.
🐾 NJ law also considers:
• Age
• Health condition
• Size
• Thickness of fur/hair
• Direct sunlight
• Hot pavement

🔥 All of these can increase the danger to a dog.

🚨 Heatstroke is a medical emergency.
🐶 Signs of heatstroke include:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Weakness or collapse
• Confusion
• Seizures
• Organ failure
• Death

🏠 A dog house alone is NOT enough.
🌡️ Dog houses must have proper ventilation, shade, and cooling protection. A poorly ventilated dog house can trap dangerous heat inside.

📸 If you see a dog in unsafe living conditions:
• Safely document the conditions
• Note the temperature, time, and location
• Contact local animal control or police
• If the dog appears in immediate medical distress, call 911 or emergency responders

Please message us, if nobody responds. Send us all the information, including pictures.

❤️ Dogs depend on humans for protection from the elements.

April is Animal Cruelty Awareness Month!
Although Bergen County SPCA no longer investigates animal cruelty and neglect we are still actively working to get it addressed and to educate people on what to look for and how to report it.
In New Jersey animal cruelty and neglect must be reported to the police department. Every police agency has a designated Humane Law Enforcement Officer.
