and townships of Casco, Geneva and South Haven with fire protection and emergency medical services. South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) serves the City of South Haven and neighboring townships of Casco, Geneva and South Haven. The department responds to more than 2,000 calls annually. South Haven has had a fire department since 1888. The first equipment consisted of a wagon designed to car

ry ladders and two dozen pails. The wagon was pulled through the streets by the firefighters. In addition, a tank capable of holding 100 barrels of water was constructed in the central business district. Today, the South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) operates out of three stations equipped with numerous pieces of fire fighting apparatus, three ambulances, and a trailered fire boat. A well equipped heavy rescue truck serves the department in responses to a busy Interstate highway that runs through the community. The geographic challenges of the community (Lake Michigan lakefront, dunes and wooded areas) is served by smaller equipment such as a grass truck and the quad runner. The industrial base and nearby South Haven airport is protected by a foam-equipped trailer.

SHAES was among firefighters from five departments who responded to a fire that engulfed a Columbia Township mobile home early Sunday morning.

The departments were dispatched to 18th Avenue near 53rd Street, west of Breedsville, at 3:12 a.m.

Responding was the Columbia Township Fire Department with mutual aid provided by the Bangor Community, Bloomingdale, Lee Township and South Haven Emergency Services (SHAES).

The lone occupant escaped without injury.

The fire appeared to have started on the front porch and spread throughout the structure.

One firefighter suffered a cut to a hand and was treated on-scene by LIFE ambulance personnel. He continued his firefighting tasks.

Fire departments across the country are faced with a growing personnel crisis, especially those who rely on volunteer community members for meeting staffing needs.

South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) Executive Director Brandon Hinz decided to do something about it.

Three years ago Hinz established the SHAES Cadet program for local high school students. While pursuing State of Michigan firefighter certification through an Academy or a School District course, the Cadets experience the profession first-hand by attending SHAES drills with current staff, responding to real-life emergencies and just hanging around the fire hall.

"Neighboring fire departments experienced great success with their FF Cadet programs, so I utilized their guidance in developing our own." Columbia Twp, Graafschap and North Berrien Fire Departments all shared policies and protocol to help develop a program that suited SHAES.

Cadets are equipped with turnout gear and pagers. Their role at emergencies is to observe, not to fire-fight. A staff member serves as an on-scene mentor. The program has grown to currently have six cadets.

Michigan firefighters must be 18 years old to officially be certified as a Firefighter. This week marked a first. South Haven’s first cadet became an officially certified paid-on-call firefighter.

Hinz’s dream came to fruition at 12:01 a.m. Thursday when Ayden Quinn transitioned from cadet to firefighter.

This is a great story that goes beyond the Cadet program. Ayden becomes a third generation SHAES firefighter, joining his father, Tim, and grandfather, Don. Tim is an active Lieutenant in the department while Don retired from the department with 50 years of service, first with the Covert Fire Department, then South Haven Fire Department and the last 25 years with SHAES. His grandmother, the late Pat Quinn, served on the Covert and SHAES departments.

A senior at South Haven High School, Ayden over the years, before the Cadet program even started, would frequently be seen at a fire scene or at the station with his dad.

“This milestone moment is so rewarding,” said Chief Hinz. “I am grateful to our friends at the Van Buren ISD, the Van Buren and Berrien training councils, the families of our cadets and to our current SHAES staff for their support. Fire protection has been a South Haven community priority since the department’s founding in 1888. Programs like this will assure its continued service long into the future.”

Spring is here and so is the threat of field fires! Unattended open fires, combined with the wind and dry foilage, are the ingredients for creating out-of-control field fires. Our fire fighters were busy at a field fire Saturday in South Haven Township.

Each working fire response poses its own unique challenge. This morning (Friday) it was an inaccessible muddy road leading to a burning out-building in Casco Township. SHAES responded at 8:20 a.m. to reports of a building fully engulfed in flames at 71st Street along Interstate 196. The fire could not be reached with vehicles forcing firefighters to stretch hundreds of feet of hose while slogging thru the mud from the roadway to the scene. Several goats, a horse and a dog escaped the flames.

A southside commercial establishment was extensively damaged by fire on Thursday morning.

South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) responded to a report of a structure fire at the A&D One Stop, 883 Indiana Ave., at 8:20 a.m.

A&D One Stop is a neighborhood convenience store that has been located at the southside location for several years.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic. A second alarm brought Bangor Community and Covert Township firefighters to the scene.

The business was not open at the time. The owner reported being in the building about 30 minutes before the alarm.

A nearby attached short-term-rental suffered smoke damage, but was saved from the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

South Haven Police Department and South Haven Board of Public Works assisted at the scene.

A message fro Chief Hinz:

Lake Michigan can be extremely volatile, and cold-water incidents are particularly dangerous. The most recent incident off the South Pier is a reminder of why pier closures are put in place.

When Lake Michigan conditions become dangerous, pier closing decisions are made with public safety in mind. With the water temperatures, along with the high winds and waves, a situation can become life-threatening very quickly. Those same conditions also put SHAES personnel and our public safety partners at significant risk during a rescue.

I encourage everyone to pay attention to posted closures, warning flags, and guidance.

Our crews are always ready to respond, but respecting those warnings helps prevent emergencies in the first place.

This is a follow-up to our posting from earlier today regarding an incident Friday on South Haven's Lake Michigan south pier. (see below)

A citizen, Ryan Bale, captured the moment the subject was being washed off the pier into the lake and has provided it to SHAES with permission to post it. Thank you Ryan!

Let this photo be a reminder of the power of the lake waves and the dangers they pose.

A 57-year-old man reported to be from out-of-state escaped with his life when waves swept him off the Lake Michigan south pier in South Haven on Friday evening.

South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) and South Haven Police Department responded to a report of a person being swept off the pier into the water at 5:40 p.m.

The pier was closed at the time with waves sweeping over it.

A second person with the victim threw him a life ring and pulled him to safety. He was out of the water when authorities arrived. The incident occurred near the lighthouse end of the pier.

The subject was taken to Bronson-South Haven Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Persons who go onto the piers in South Haven when they are closed are subject to a $1,000 fine. The city declared the piers closed earlier in the day because of the high wind and wave conditions.

Through its ongoing beach safety program, the City of South Haven installed year-round life ring stations in 2023. The South Haven Rotary Club supported the program with a $13,500 grant for the installation of the six stations located on the south and north piers.

The firehouse is “home” to first responders whose 24-hour shifts include eating meals together. A growing staff at South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) created a challenge of getting everyone around the table at mealtime. Some imaginative thinking by firefighters, combined with the creative work of two local businesses, Goose Nest Woodworks and Lakeshore Iron, resulted in the construction of a table that is not only larger, but is steeped in the history of the department. The table surface consists of patient backboards no longer in service. Its metal base features the logo of the department connected by a ladder. Embedded in epoxy on the table are logos and other historical memorabilia. Pictured with SHAES Firefighter/Paramedic Cody Sedlak who spearheaded the project are Andrew Gossman, Carl Eastman, Seth Eastman and Bruce Parmley.
