Our recent training nights focused on refreshing essential skills.

During our “First to the Door” evolutions, crews practiced quickly deploying and charging a hose line while a second firefighter forced entry and performed a rapid floor sweep for victims. Firefighters were then met with locating and removing a downed victim while maintaining communication with command.

Our following training focused on pump and apparatus operations for members working toward their driver/operator sign-offs. Before being cleared to drive and operate each truck, members complete extensive hands-on training and must re-test annually to maintain proficiency.

Consistent training keeps our members prepared, confident, and always ready when the call comes.

Effective July 1, 2026, Vermont Act 162 changed the way Town Forest Fire Wardens are designated throughout the state. Under the new law, the Fire Chief of the department with primary responsibility for fire protection automatically serves as the Town Forest Fire Warden. [mynbc5.com], [eastmontpeliervt.org]
❗️For South Hero, this results in NO change to who serves as Fire Warden, as Fire Chief Robinson was already serving in that role.
-However, Act 162 has created questions regarding liability and responsibility for burn permit issuance and oversight. Until those issues are better defined and resolved, the South Hero Volunteer Fire Department will be taking a more cautious approach to issuing burn permits.
Effective immediately:
✅ All burn permit applications will be subject to additional review.
✅ All burn piles must be inspected by the Fire Warden prior to a permit being issued.
✅ Permit approval will be based on pile contents, location, weather conditions, and overall fire safety considerations.
-These measures are being implemented to protect our community, our property, and our firefighters while ensuring compliance with the new state requirements.
-South Hero residents can still go to the town office and they will reach out to Chief/Warden Robinson.
-We appreciate your patience and understanding as we adapt to these legislative changes. If you are planning a burn, please allow additional time for permit processing and inspections.
-Questions regarding burn permits may be directed to the South Hero Volunteer Fire Department.
Stay safe and burn responsibly.
