The Meetinghouse started her move back today--with some good, old-fashioned manpower (and a lot of careful eyes on the rollers and I-beams!) Work will continue tomorrow (Wed.,9/9) weather permitting.

Small but mighty -- these are the rollers that were used to move the Meeting House off its foundation last June and which will help her make the return trip next week. The move will start sometime Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 8, and continue on Wednesday. Stop by and watch!

What else has been discovered while the Meeting House is temporarily opened up? Evidence of a fire affecting timbers the northwest corner. We'll need to scour records for reports of one--maybe a lightning strike?

Looking up at the temporarily exposed underside of second floor of the Old White Meeting House. Notice any differences? The older construction on the left is the floor of one of the balconies in the original Meeting House (1816). The narrower, newer boards on the right were put in to close off the second floor when the Meeting House became a school building (c. 1900).

Preparations being made to move the Meeting House onto its new foundation. The structure will be moved along these steel beams, reversing the procedure we saw just a few months ago. The move could take place next Thursday or Friday -- we'll keep you posted!

"walk-around" the exterior of the Old White Meeting House. From 9am to 10am, David Carter, a chair of the Town's Meetinghouse Committee, will be on site to talk about some of what we can see, in this temporary opportunity to look into the building from the outside, such as hints of what the Meetinghouse looked like in its earliest days, when it provided space for worship by local Congregationalists and Methodists. (There will be no access to the inside, which is an active construction site. )��The Meetinghouse is located on Route 2 in South Hero's historic village center, between the Blue Paddle and the Arbor Farm Market. There is limited parking on site, as Granny's Attic will be open next door, but you may also park along Route 2.

The exterior walls of the Old White Meetinghouse are temporarily opened up, giving us a temporary opportunity to peek inside and learn about what the Meeting House looked like in its earliest day, when it provided worship space for local Congregationalists and Methodists. This Saturday, August 22nd, from 9am to 10am, David Carter, a chair of the Town’s Meetinghouse Committee, will be on site to talk about what the exposed interior architecture shows us. We hope you will join us! The Meetinghouse is located on Route 2 in South Hero’s historic village center. There is limited parking on site, but you may park along Route 2.

The stone facing on the new foundation looks great, doesn’t it

The stone was saved when the 1816 foundation was removed to make way for this new, sturdier one. The old stone is being reused as facing around what will be ground level. (Where our mason is now standing will be filled in after his work is done.)

Structural repairs continue while waiting to move the Meeting House back onto its new foundation.
