đźš” Welcome Officer Benjamin Barnes! đźš”

This morning, the South Hill Police Department proudly welcomed our newest officer, Officer Benjamin Barnes, who was officially sworn in by Mayor Moody.

Officer Barnes brings nearly seven years of law enforcement experience to our department. As a certified law enforcement officer, he will complete a field training phase with our department before being released to solo patrol duties.

We are excited to have Officer Barnes join our team and look forward to the knowledge, professionalism, and experience he brings to the Town of South Hill.

Please join us in welcoming Officer Benjamin Barnes to the South Hill Police Department and our community. We wish him continued success as he begins this new chapter of service.

The South Hill Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, the family, friends, and fellow deputies of the fallen deputy who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

Please keep the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and the deputy's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Deputy. Your watch is ended, but your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The South Hill Police Department, in coordination with the Virginia State Police, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrenceville Police Department, Brodnax Police Department, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Boydton Police Department, Clarksville Police Department, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, South Boston Police Department, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, and Danville City Police Department, will be conducting a joint enforcement initiative along U.S. Route 58 May 20-21, 2026. This collaborative effort brings together local, county, and state law enforcement partners to enhance highway safety and reinforce traffic laws across one of Southside Virginia’s most heavily traveled corridors.

The operation will place particular emphasis on speed enforcement, seat belt compliance, and other hazardous driving behaviors known to contribute to crashes. The goal of this coordinated project is to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatal crashes along Route 58 by increasing visibility, promoting safe driving habits, and ensuring motorists remain attentive and responsible behind the wheel. Agencies urge all drivers to stay alert, obey posted speed limits, and help keep Virginia’s roadways safe for everyone during upcoming travel season.

Yesterday, May 14, 2026, members of the South Hill Police Department were proud to join the annual VIN Etching Event at Walmart alongside our partners from the Virginia State Police HEAT Team, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, and the Virginia DMV Law Enforcement Division.

We would like to sincerely thank the Virginia State Police and the HEAT Team for organizing and allowing us to participate in this important community event focused on preventing vehicle theft.

By working together and providing VIN etching services to the public, our shared goal is to help deter auto theft and keep our communities safer. We appreciate everyone who came out and supported this effort!

Partnerships like these continue to make a difference through teamwork, education, and proactive crime prevention.

Last night, the South Hill Police Department came together with our staff and their families to celebrate National Police Week during a very special Police Week Dinner. It was an evening filled with fellowship, laughter, memories, and appreciation as we gathered together as one police family.

Throughout the evening, we reflected on the past year, celebrated the accomplishments of our department, presented career achievement ribbons, recognized award recipients, shared a great meal, and enjoyed some wonderful prizes.

One of the most meaningful moments of the night was honoring retired Corporal Harvey King. We were proud to present him with an upgraded retired corporal’s badge in recognition of his dedicated years of service to the South Hill Police Department. We also presented him with the generous donations collected from current and retired officers, businesses, friends, and community partners. The outpouring of support for Corporal King and his family is a true reflection of the strength and compassion of this community.

We would also like to congratulate our 2025 award recipients:

🏆 Officer Heather McCall – Officer of the Year
🏆 Captain Chris Parrott – Supervisor of the Year
🏆 Joanna Fitts – Chief’s Commendation Award

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a success. Events like these remind us that while policing is a profession, the South Hill Police Department is truly a family.
