• Let faucets drip to keep water moving
• Open cabinet doors so warm air can reach pipes
• Keep your heat set consistently
• Close garage doors
• Know where your main water shutoff valve is

Frigid temperatures are here to stay for several days, with parts of the state under Cold Weather Advisories again tonight through Monday. Please take extra precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your home during this prolonged cold snap.

Cold Weather Safety Tips:
• Dress in layers and cover exposed skin when outdoors
• Limit time outside and take frequent warm-up breaks
• Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and those without reliable heat
• Bring pets indoors and ensure they have warm shelter and fresh water
• Use space heaters safely—keep them at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
• Never use ovens, grills, or generators to heat your home
• Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working

Staying warm is important—but staying safe is critical. Let’s look out for one another and weather this cold together.

We are expecting dangerously cold temperatures and extreme wind chills starting tomorrow through this weekend. An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for the Chicago area, and wind chills could feel as low as -30°F to -40°F. This kind of cold can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Stay Warm & Safe
• Wear multiple layers of warm clothing, including a hat, gloves or mittens, and a scarf.
• Limit time outdoors and check on neighbors, especially older adults and those with health needs.
• Keep pets inside or ensure they have proper shelter.

If You Need Shelter
Cook County has designated warming centers open for residents who need a warm place during the extreme cold.

• Skokie Courthouse — 5600 Old Orchard Rd., Skokie
• Maywood Courthouse — 1500 Maybrook Dr., Maywood
• Markham Courthouse — 16501 S. Kedzie Ave., Markham

Car Care in Extreme Cold
Cold weather can strain your vehicle. To keep your car running smoothly:
• Keep your gas tank at least half full to help prevent fuel line freeze.
• Check tire tread and tire pressure often. Cold air lowers pressure.
• Pack a winter emergency kit with blankets, gloves, ice scraper, and jumper cables.
