The Short Story of our Landfill

“Trans-” is a latin prefix that means “across”. Think “Transcontinental railroad”, or “Transatlantic Steamer.” Our parent organization is the Trans-Jordan Cities, an interlocal organization formed by the seven cities in south Salt Lake County who span across the Jordan River. These cities include Draper, Midvale, Murray, Riverton, Sandy, South Jordan, and West Jordan. Approximately 450,000 people occupying approximately 125,000 residences. And now you know.

Trans-Jordan Landfill is a solid waste landfill facility that was created in 1958. Our design capacity is 14 million tons of municipal solid waste, and in 2017, we received nearly 368,000 tons of waste! From this amount, we diverted 24,000 tons of “green waste” (tree limbs and grass clippings) which we turned into fine compost and woodchip products. Nearly 1,200 tons of metal was recovered from the waste and sent to the metal recycling facility. All the rest was buried within a specialty plastic liner, environmentally compliant to avoid groundwater contamination. The waste was then covered with earth and again, more waste. Fill, cover, repeat. That’s landfilling!

Alas, the Trans-Jordan Landfill will not last forever. We are in our early “old age”, and in 10-15 years we will be completely full. What happens then? We could simply demand that you no longer bring your garbage to the curb, but that’s not very realistic. Instead, we’ve been busy making plans for this eventuality. Along with a few other Utah landfills facing the same end-of-life conundrum, we bought a small landfill in southern Utah County - the Bayview Landfill - to which we will transfer all of our waste when the day finally arrives. Bayview will continue to grow into a regional facility, and will provide us over 85 years of usable life. This ensures the solid waste future for the Trans-Jordan Cities, and becomes one less thing to worry about as the years go by.

By the way, the photo above is of Kelly’s Corner - a special area near our public convenience center (PCC) where we have chosen to memorialize our former Landfill Supervisor and good friend Kelly Jolley. After a short bout with cancer, Kelly passed away in July of 2017. He worked at the Trans-Jordan Landfill for nearly 28 years, and was our longest-serving employee. Kelly was a committed father and grandfather, a mentor to many at the Landfill, a steady and non-excitable voice of reason in counseling both employees and senior managers alike; he was instrumental in the long-term success of our facility. Kelly always loved our spring wildflower season, and we have filled this corner of the Landfill with flowers in honor of his memory.
