UPDATE: Drive By Shooting In South Lake Tahoe

Just prior to 10:00pm on December 29th 2016, SLTPD received a report of a drive by shooting at the Pioneer Inn Motel, located at 3863 Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe. Officers responded and looked for a suspect vehicle described as a dark pick-up truck. Officers did not immediately locate the vehicle or any involved suspect(s). Detectives responded to the crime scene, collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Witnesses described that several young Hispanic males occupied the truck, which had driven westbound on Pioneer Trail and stopped in front of the Pioneer Inn parking lot. One or more of the vehicle occupants began shooting into the parking lot area of the motel. The truck then left westbound on Pioneer Trail. Witnesses all described that several rounds were discharged from the suspect vehicle, but a specific number has not yet been fully determined. No one was injured. Investigation is in progress in an effort to identify suspect(s) and/or motives for this crime. Witnesses have told police they suspect the crime may be related to gang activity, but this has yet to be confirmed by investigators.

Throughout a very busy night, SLTPD patrol officers continued to search the area. Before sunrise this morning they located a vehicle parked in the 3600 block of Pioneer Trail which generally matched the suspect vehicle description, and may have been involved in this event. Investigation throughout the night and early morning confirmed this was in fact the vehicle involved in the shooting as described by witnesses. After sunrise this morning, with assistance from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, several SLTPD Officers and Detectives contacted the owner of this vehicle and several other occupants of the vehicle owner’s residence on Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe.

Detectives have seized this vehicle pending a search warrant. They are currently questioning the people contacted this morning to identify any specific suspect(s) related to the drive by shooting at the Pioneer Inn Motel last night, to determine a possible motive and whether or not this crime may be gang related.

UPDATE:

On 12/30/16 Kevin Gonzales, an 18 year old South Lake Tahoe resident, was arrested in connection with this drive-by shooting. Gonzalez was booked into the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe for one felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon and one misdemeanor charge of destruction of evidence. Because the case is still being investigated, and we anticipate questioning additional suspects in this matter, the actions of Gonzalez specific to the shooting are not being revealed in this news release. The charge of destruction of evidence is based upon detectives’ observations of Gonzalez. Prior to his arrest, while detectives were surveilling the vehicle involved in the drive by shooting, detectives watched Gonzalez retrieve and attempt to destroy evidence from the vehicle. The specific nature of this evidence is being intentionally withheld at this time based on investigative necessity. Detectives recovered the undamaged evidence in question at the time they arrested Gonzalez. No firearms have yet been recovered in this case. We have no information at this time which ties this crime to gang activity. Gonzalez’ bail is set at 75,000 dollars. More suspects are being sought in this investigation and we anticipate more arrests will be made in this case.

If anyone witnessed this crime, or has information relative to this case, please call the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530-542-6100, or Lake Tahoe Secret Witness at 530-541-6800.

Vacation Home Rental Scams on Craigslist South Lake Tahoe, CA (December 7, 2016) – The South Lake Tahoe Police Department would like to warn potential vacation home renters of an ongoing scam on Craigslist. These listings may include pictures and a lengthy description of a real house. Unsuspecting vacationers are paying in advance, usually by check or Western Union wire. The supposed landlord takes receipt of the money and when
the victim shows up to the vacation rental, they find that the home is occupied by a permanent resident or that there are other renters in the home.

In South Lake Tahoe, cases are again being reported. In an effort to avoid being scammed while renting a vacation home, we suggest the following;

• Use a Credit Card: Never use bank wires, certified checks, western union, or any other service where the money is gone forever immediately after you send it. The credit card company has already performed basic background checks on the company charging your card.
• Obtain full contact info and verify: Obtain full contact information for the person you are dealing with (name / address / phone number / email / etc) and verify that information (by using
Google search, etc). Any real business should be easy to verify, as they will have a full web site,
be in the yellow pages, be easy to contact, etc. However, if dealing with a person, ask for references, especially full work contact info, and verify that contact info.
• Your phone calls are answered: If they always have to call you back (when you call, you always have to leave a message to call you back), then avoid. When they call, ask for a phone number where you can immediately call them back. If they don't pick up the phone, watch out. Be aware that many scammers use message services (no one answers; you always need to leave a message). Also, Google any phone numbers. You should find your contact person associated with that number. If not, that may indicate the phone number is brand new.

If you are a victim of a vacation rental scam, contact the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at (530) 542-6100.

Suspect Arrested in South Lake Tahoe Food Contamination Crimes

For the past week detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department have been investigating reports of several instances of intentional contamination of food items by a suspect(s) in at least two local restaurants. The first report involved approximately four events at the Hot Wok Chinese Food restaurant in the Raley’s Supermarket. The next report involved a similar number of events at the Baja Fresh restaurant in the same South Lake Tahoe shopping center. The crimes occurred over an approximate two week time period, from November 8th through November 19th. Based upon the suspect’s method of operation and description of the appearance and chemical odor associated with the substance used to contaminate the food sources, detectives believe the crimes are connected.

Detectives, through collaboration with Raley’s security personnel, were able to identify the suspect in the video as 43 year old Harry Dally. On November 22nd detectives served a search warrant at Dally’s residence which is located within South Lake Tahoe. The search warrant service revealed items of interest related to this investigation. The SLTPD now has an indication of what the contaminating substance may be. We are intentionally withholding this information for its investigatory value pending laboratory analysis confirmation and questioning of the suspect. Based upon this arrest we believe the immediate jeopardy to the public has been abated. Nevertheless, reasonable caution by the public and our community food proprietors is still warranted due to the identity of the suspect responsible for the Baja Fresh crimes has not yet been fully established. Further public information related to this case will likely be made available tomorrow after consultation with laboratory services and other investigative priorities have been met.

Dally has been arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe. He is charged with a single felony count of intentionally dispensing a contaminating substance capable of causing death or injury on food items for human consumption as this offense relates to the Hot Wok inside of Raley’s.

While we believe a strong possibility exists that the crimes at the Baja Fresh restaurant and the Raley’s Hot Wok are connected, we have yet to receive video from Baja Fresh corporate resources in order to make a positive identification of a suspect there. Detectives continue to objectively investigate the crimes at Baja Fresh, on their own merit.
