May 15, 2020

EL DORADO COUNTY – A full closure of U.S. Highway 50 for the Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project is being postponed until after Labor Day, Caltrans announced today. Construction has not progressed such that the bridge work requiring a full closure of Highway 50 could be completed by June 15.

A full closure of Highway 50 is not permitted between June 15 and Labor Day due to high traffic volumes expected during the peak summer season in South Lake Tahoe.

This $14.1 million project is replacing the existing bridge, which was built in 1939, with a structure that meets current seismic and safety standards. Construction started in May 2019. No traffic-interfering work on the project is anticipated now until sometime in August.

Requests for passes for local residents and businesses to use Johnson Pass Road as a detour around the work site also are suspended but will be made available again once closure dates are solidified later in the summer.

For more information on the project, visit Way2.Tahoe.com on Twitter @way2Tahoe or on Facebook/Way2Tahoe.

CHP Officer Nunes responded to a traffic collision on US-50 near Camp Sacramento. The driver of a white Dodge Ram veered off the roadway and collided into 100 feet of guardrail. The guardrail prevented the truck from traveling down an embankment and into the South Fork American River. Luckily no one was injured in this collision.

Foothills Towing has been called out to recover the truck. Please be cautious in the area and watch out for CHP, tow drivers, and CALTRANS workers, especially for the next hour.

This pedestrian was observed jogging on SR-89 south of Grass Lake Rd. I had to pull over and warn him of the danger he was putting himself in by wearing all black. Please wear bright colored clothing while jogging or bicycling on the road. This is also a good example of why texting and driving is so dangerous. Pay attention and don't drive distracted. We are celebrating dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week!

The CHP South Lake Tahoe office would like to thank all dispatchers for their outstanding work and dedication!

Day in, and day out, hundreds of people depend on the skill, expertise and commitment of the dispatchers who work in public safety communications. These team members handle emergency telephone calls, dispatch law enforcement resources, and provide moral support to people in distress. Their "normal" workday is anything but normal in so many ways.

Thank you so much!

General information

The CHP has a vested interest to serve and protect your community, because we live there too. Our motto of Safety, Service, and Security is brought to fruition in many ways: Safety: Our officers risk their lives daily to protect those who travel our roadways. Some have given their lives to rescue others. Service: We pride ourselves in providing professional service to the public, whether on patrol, on the phone, or through education – such as showing citizens how to properly install child safety seats or teaching young drivers how to drive safely. Our field offices respond to local needs through open communication with community leaders and allied agencies. Security: We are charged with protecting the public, their property, state employees, and the state’s infrastructure. This is a monumental task that could not be performed without the commitment of our employees. The public trusts us to keep our roadways safe, and we are committed to maintaining that trust. You depend on us, and our state’s economic vitality depends on us as well. The California Highway Patrol is proud to serve all motorists in this state, and we are working hard to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security each and every day.

Today you awesome folks posted about an officer picking up after sledders, most of the comments though were asking why your allowing so many people to park in areas that are posted no parking anytime. Year round In Tahoe I see people parked directly in front of the no parking signs, but have very rarely ever seen tickets in windows, or tow trucks moving vehicles out of dangerous areas. As residents of this awesome town can we expect to see the law enforcement, helping out with this issue instead of just driving by them? I get you folks are very busy, but I bet all the tow truck drivers would love to come help out and rid our town of this elitist mentality that parking restrictions are not meant for them!
