South Lake Tahoe CHP Officers were involved in a short pursuit today with an electric motorcycle. The electric motorcycle was being ridden in a reckless manner (wheelies, crossing in front of traffic on a busy highway, speeding). The 15-year-old male rider then failed to stop and attempted to evade officers when they went to stop him using lights and sirens. After the short pursuit, the rider finally stopped. The rider was then released to a parent.

The electric motorcycle was impounded for 22651.08(a) CVC. This section requires the electric motorcycle to be impounded for a minimum of 48 hours.

The rider could be facing charges to include, but not limited to, evading police, reckless driving, being unlicensed, no insurance, no registration, no motorcycle helmet (he was wearing a bike helmet). The rider has also had contact with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department for similar activities.

Please see our Facebook post of 07/22/2026 regarding electric bicycles and related laws. Complaints about electric bicycle/motorcycle riders has increased in recent months.

The California Highway Patrol is proud to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 36th Anniversary. On July 26th, we celebrate this important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

WORK ZONE AWARE

Expect summer travel delays through the Lake Tahoe region due to heavy seasonal traffic and ongoing regional construction. U.S. Highway 50 and State Route 28 are experiencing significant one-way traffic control and lane reductions as Caltrans rushes to complete work before winter.

For up-to-the-minute road conditions and construction locations in and around the Lake Tahoe Basin, you can utilize the following resources:
Route Updates: Use the Caltrans QuickMap to view real-time traffic, lane closures, and active work zones.
Traffic Incidents: Check the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page for local accidents and enforcement alerts.

07/23/2026

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) enforces state e-bike laws, which divide e-bikes into three classes (max speeds of 20 to 28 mph). Riders under 18 must wear a helmet, and Class 3 riders must be 16 or older. The CHP also offers a free, statewide Online E-bike Safety Course to help educate riders on laws and road etiquette. Scan the QR code for more info.

Because e-bikes have surged in popularity—often leading to local conflicts over speed and trail access—the CHP has increased enforcement and education efforts. If a vehicle marketed as an e-bike can exceed legal limits (such as a 40 mph throttle-only mode) without pedaling, the CHP classifies it as an unregistered moped or motorcycle. Local CHP divisions frequently issue public warnings and impound these illegal high-speed bikes.
