🚒 SLFD Training Night!

This week's training focused on apparatus maneuvering, water supply, and hose advancement.

Engineers navigated our least maneuverable apparatus through a serpentine course, then dropped crews at a simulated residential fire. They then performed a reverse lay, supplying water to the attack crew before connecting to a hydrant for a sustained water supply.

Meanwhile, ground crews advanced hose lines around multiple trees, simulating a home's corners, before reaching the endpoint and attacking the simulated fire.

A great night of practicing essential fireground skills, communication, and teamwork! 🚒🔥

🔥🚒 Congratulations to Our 2026 Fire Academy Graduates!

Wednesday night, we celebrated Brett Cook and Cam Adams as they graduated from the 2026 Livingston County Firefighter Training Academy, marking the completion of nearly a year of hard work and dedication.

Brett completed both the Fire Academy and EMT program, while Cam, already an EMT, completed the Fire Academy.

A special congratulations to Cam, who received “The Pipeman” Award, recognizing his outstanding performance, commitment, drive, and determination for excellence throughout the academy.

Congratulations, Brett and Cam! We’re proud to have you representing SLFD! 🚒🔥

🚨 🚨Fire Safety Friday🚨🚨

Now that the colder weather is upon us, this means we are turning our furnaces on to warm our homes. Lets take a moment to speak about Carbon Monoxide (CO).

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, and colorless gas produced when fuels burn incompletely. Because you can't see or smell it, proper alarm maintenance and safe fuel habits are critical.

Essential CO Safety Rules:
-🚨 Install & Interconnect: Place CO alarms outside every sleeping area and on every level of your home. For the best protection, interconnect them so when one sounds, they all sound.
-🔋 Test Monthly: Test your CO alarms at least once a month and replace batteries promptly if the low-battery signal chirps.
-🚗 Keep Engines Outside: Never run a car, generator, or fuel-burning equipment inside a garage, even if the door is open.
-❄️ Clear Snow From Vents: After winter storms, make sure exhaust vents for your dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are free of snow build-up.
-🏃 If the Alarm Sounds: Immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors (or near an open door/window) and call for help. Stay there until emergency responders say it's safe to go back inside.

Training Tuesday, September 22nd: SLFD crews took advantage of the cooler weather with a live burn.

Crews began by practicing a reverse lay, where the engine starts near the fire building and lays supply hose back toward the hydrant to establish a water supply. From there, firefighters practiced flaking the attack line—properly laying out the hose so it can advance smoothly without kinks or tangles and without lowering water pressure.

Crews also focused on door control, keeping an exterior or interior door controlled until the hose team is ready to advance. Controlling the door helps limit the amount of fresh air feeding the fire, which can slow fire growth and improve conditions for firefighters and anyone still inside.

Once inside, crews practiced stretching and advancing the hose line through a structure, navigating turns, hallways, and interior doors while maintaining good hose management and communication.

Live fire training gives our firefighters the opportunity to build confidence, reinforce fundamentals, and practice working together in conditions that closely resemble what they may encounter on an actual structure fire. 🔥🚒
