SouthMills FireDepartment Stations 14 and 15 provide fire service for the community of South Mills, NC. Today, we average about 35 members and 10 Jr. Firefighter members.

Brief Overview and List of Officers

Formed in 1946, South Mills Volunteer Fire Department (Station 14) has provided the citizens of South Mills with fire and rescue protection. In 2011, a new station was built on Keeter Barn Road and at that time our location on Halstead Street was renamed Station 15 which is currently still in use. Below is a list of our current officers. South Mills Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of John Whitehurst (Father of our Assistant Chief Mike Whitehurst) on his passing. Mr. Whitehurst was a well known figure in the South Mills community and his presence will be greatly missed. Please keep the Whitehurst family in your prayers.

An EXTREME HEAT WARNING is in effect from 10am this morning until 8pm tonight

Heat index values 110 or greater expected.

Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.

UPDATE:
Repairs have been completed. Affected properties have been notified with a boil water notice.

A water main on Culpepper Road has been damaged by a utility contractor. County crews are on scene at this time, (June 30, 2026 at 12:50) assess the damage. Approximately 15 homes are affected. There is currently no estimate for repair time. Please check back for updates.

* At 343 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located near Northwest, or 7 miles northeast of South Mills,
moving east at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.
Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree
damage is likely.

Extending our thanks to South Camden Volunteer Fire Department, Pasquotank Providence Fire Department, Pasquotank-Newland Volunteer Fire Department Station 9, and Camden County EMS for their participation in our joint training session conducted tonight on some of our district’s newest homes! As always, we appreciate their commitment to serving the community and their efforts to protect the public! Training today to be ready tonight! More pictures are sure to come from our drone team!
