South Orange seniors 55+ have plenty of opportunities to get together, learn something new, meet your neighbors, and have some fun this month!

🌴 OLDER ADULT POOL PICNIC
Tuesday, September 8 | 12–3 PM
Join us for an afternoon of swimming, food, music & bingo! 🏊‍♀️🍉🎶
$10 for S.O. Recreation members
Beach blanket bingo with prizes, plus transportation available within South Orange.

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL TOMORROW🚸
As students head back to school, South Orange Village and the South Orange Police Department are reminding everyone to use extra caution on our roads — especially during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
🚗 Drivers: Slow down, stay alert, put the phone away, and be prepared for children crossing.
🚸 At a crossing guard post: Please follow the guard’s directions and never drive around or through a crossing while a guard or pedestrians are in the roadway.
🚶 Students & families: Cross at designated intersections whenever possible, put down the phones, look both ways before entering the street, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
🚌 Everyone: Expect more pedestrians, bicycles, buses and vehicles on the road as school gets underway. Give yourself a few extra minutes and help make the trip to and from school safer for everyone. Check Village website and traffic alerts for construction and closures.

South Orange has crossing guard posts serving South Orange Middle School, Marshall School, South Mountain School and Annex, Our Lady of Sorrows, and routes used by students traveling to Clinton School and Columbia High School. Posts include key crossings along South Orange Avenue, Ridgewood Road, Wyoming Avenue, Grove Road, Scotland Road, Prospect Street, Third Street, Fourth Street and other locations throughout the Village.

Several roadway paving and utility projects are scheduled throughout South Orange over the coming weeks. Motorists should anticipate temporary road closures, traffic delays, and possible detours in affected areas.
Please note: All schedules are subject to change due to weather, construction conditions, and other unforeseen circumstances.
Milling & Paving
Monday, August 31
West 3rd Street between Church Street and South Ridgewood Road, as well as Church Street, will be closed for paving. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the day.
Tuesday, September 1
Paving operations will be paused.
Wednesday, September 2 – Friday, September 4, and Tuesday, September 8
The following roads are scheduled to be closed for paving*:
• 1st Street
• 2nd Street
• 3rd Street between Prospect Street and Valley Street
• Mayhew Drive
• Underhill Road
• Vista Drive
• Harding Drive between Tillou Road and Overhill Road
• Redmond Road between North Wyoming Avenue and Harding Drive
Residents should plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time while work is underway.
*Not all roads, all days. Exact days TBA.

Next Saturday, September 5th, bring your documents to be shredded securely by our document destruction provider at no cost. Proof of residency is required and commercial vehicles will not be permitted in to the yard.
8 am -12 pm at the Public Works Recycling Center at 300 Walton Avenue.
Bonus: Shredded paper will be recycled by our shredding vendor.

What a way to wrap up an amazing summer! 🎬✨

Our final Summer Movie Night brought us The Princess Bride under the stars—and we couldn’t have asked for a better night to say goodbye to Wednesday evenings in South Orange.

Before the movie, the whole crowd joined in a joyful singalong of “9 to 5”—a pretty perfect South Orange tribute to the beloved Dolly Parton.

Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout the summer, whether you came out for Skate House Sessions, Summer Concerts, or Summer Movies. You helped make these nights so special!

A big thank-you to DJ Lou for bringing the tunes and giving everyone a chance to get those wiggles out before the movie, and to the League of Women Voters for being on hand to help our community get ready to vote this November. 🗳️

And, of course, a very special thank-you to our incredible recreation staff who work so hard behind the scenes to make these events happen. And to our partners Meadowland Park Concervancy and SOPAC, we’re so grateful that you co-sponsor these nights with us. Together we’re able to bring these special events to South Orange all summer long.

It’s been an amazing summer, and we’re definitely going to miss our Wednesday nights. Thanks for making so many memories with us!
