Last night I closed out my 7 year tenure as City Councilman Place 2 for the City of South Padre Island with the following remarks:
โThank you all for this wonderful recognition. While I am deeply grateful for this plaque, and the kind words, my motivation has never been about accolades or recognition โ it has always been about making our island a better place to live and work.
It has truly been an honor serving on City Council for the past seven years and the many years on city committees. I have always believed in giving back to the community that has given me so much. These years have allowed me to work alongside dedicated leaders who share a passion for our Islandโs future. I first ran for office with many ambitious goals, and I am proud to say that, with the support of my fellow council members, we accomplished all of them. I recall a comment by Councilman Ricco many years ago which was โGood Isnโt Enough.โ Think about that โ Good Isnโt Enough. A credo we believe in and follow to this day.
I want to take a moment to recognize our incredible city staff. Every day, they come to work with the singular goal of making our Island shine. Thanks to their hard work and commitment, our island has never looked better, our beaches have never looked cleaner, and our community has never been stronger. Their dedication makes all of us on city council look good, and they deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.
As I step back from my official role, many may think Iโll ride off into the sunset. While I am looking forward to spending more time with my wife, daughters, and grandkids, and celebrating close to 25 years of my business on the Island, my commitment to our community remains. There are a few important projects I was unable to complete during my tenure, and I intend to see them through. I am in the final phase of creating the SPI Eco Tourism District, which will bring national and international attention to our islandโs vast ecological treasures. Additionally, I will continue working with a medical group to establish a much needed emergency care unit here.
In closing, I what to thank each and every one of you for the opportunity to represent you on city council. I encourage everyone to find ways to give back to our community, just as I have been privileged to do. Together, we can continue to make our island a place we are all proud to call home.
Thank you.โ
