The South Portland Police Department, in partnership with the District 2 Regional Impaired Driving Enforcement (RIDE) Team, will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in South Portland during Labor Day weekend as part of its continuing effort to deter impaired driving and improve roadway safety.

The joint enforcement detail will take place at a predetermined location within the city during the evening and early morning hours, when impaired-driving incidents are most likely to occur.

This operation is being conducted in accordance with Maine state law and constitutional guidelines, and is focused on identifying drivers who may be impaired by alcohol or drugs while also promoting awareness of the dangers of impaired driving.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead: designate a sober driver, use a taxi or rideshare service, arrange an overnight stay, or call a trusted person for a safe ride. Anyone who sees a suspected impaired driver should avoid approaching the vehicle and contact 911 when it is safe to do so.

"A safe holiday weekend starts with a sober choice behind the wheel," the department said. "Plan your ride before the celebration begins, and help everyone get home safely."

Happy Reunion Story

Theo the cat has been brought home after having been missing for over a month! Theo was staying at his owners mom’s house while the owner was down in Jamaica helping build houses after the most recent hurricane. Theo found an open window, destroyed the screen and got out of the house. Since Mid July, Theo was sporadically seen in the neighborhood. Many neighbors were on the lookout for Theo. A few days ago, ACO Maggie was called and asked for some help with Theo. He was hanging out in an area a little more frequently, so she set up a trap. After perfecting its location with the help of some neighbors, Theo was captured safely. Once Theo has decompressed a little, he will make a trip to the vet to come up with a plan to get him back up to a healthy weight.

Thanks for the help of all the neighbors and ACO Maggie!
