The Coast Guard is closely monitoring upcoming weather conditions and river ice to help reduce the risk of ice jam flooding in our local waterways. As part of these proactive efforts, Coast Guard cutters will be deployed around the northern New England area of responsibility to conduct icebreaking operations.

These operations are conducted to help relieve ice buildup and reduce the potential for flooding in surrounding communities. We encourage mariners and residents along the river to remain aware of vessel activity and changing ice conditions during this time.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.

The Coast Guard Cutter TACKLE transited to Muscongus Bay to service Aids to Navigation in need of maintenance and repair.

This photograph is of the TACKLE’s crew servicing “The Kegs” day beacon, which marks an isolated ledge in central Muscongus Bay along the Mid-Coast region of Maine. The TACKLE conducted a periodic inspection replacing its degraded day boards. This is a very common project for their crew. Most of the aids serviced by the local Maine Coast Guard Cutters TACKLE, BRIDLE, and THUNDER BAY are structures like these. This structure is a newer style spindle tower which allows technicians to access the aid more easily, however many of our aids are older monopole designs needing replacement and are often not safe or possible for our technicians to climb.

National Safe Boating Week is here – and it’s time to gear up for a safer summer on the water!
From May 17–23, as we sail into Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial kickoff to boating season, the U.S. Coast Guard urges everyone—boaters and beachgoers alike—to put safety first.

The numbers don’t lie: In 2023, there were 3,844 recreational boating accidents, leading to 564 tragic deaths, 2,126 injuries, and over $63 million in damages. 87% of drowning victims weren’t wearing a life jacket. Let’s change that.

Here’s how you can make a difference every time you’re on the water:
🦺 Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket—no exceptions.
🔎 Make sure it fits and matches your activity.
🚫 Skip the alcohol when operating a vessel—your judgment and your life depend on it.
📲 Find more safety tips at uscgboating.org and safeboatingcampaign.com

Let’s make 2025 the safest boating season yet.

While the weather is soon to be warming up, the water is still cold! 🥶

Did you know the average water temperatures in Maine in April is only in the low 40’s?

Cold water can lead to hypothermia fast if you're immersed, so whether you're on a boat or paddle craft make sure to take extra precautions and stay safe!

Several things to consider:
🦺Always wear a life jacket.
🌡️Dress for the water temperature, not air temperature. Wear cold water protection, like a wetsuit or dry suit.
📡Carry an Emergency Position Indication Radio Device.
📝File a float plan with someone you trust.
