Yesterday morning, we welcomed all staff from across the district to come together and kick off the start of the school year. We celebrated being together as a district, reflected on the year ahead, and heard heartfelt messages from staff and students, including special guest speakers City of South Portland Mayor Elyse Tipton and School Board Chair Rosemarie DeAngelis. We can’t wait to welcome our students back next week!

UPDATE: Student Personal Electronic Devices Policy

Students will only use school-provided devices during the school day–from start to dismissal.

The intent of Policy JICJ is to support a focused learning environment, minimize distractions, and promote student social and emotional well-being by regulating the use of student personal cell phones, smart watches, and other personal electronic devices (PEDs) during the school day. This update aligns our district practices with the new Maine law imposing a ban on student use of personal electronic devices during the school day:

Students will only use school-provided devices during the school day. All students are prohibited from using cell phones and other personal electronic devices with internet or cellular network connectivity for the duration of the entire school day—from start to dismissal—unless an explicit exception applies. Prior to the start of the day, personal devices must be powered off, stored away as directed by the school, and not worn or accessed.

Students who require the use of a cell phone during the school day for a documented educational, medical, disability-related, or safety need may be eligible for an exemption.

Last week, South Portland Schools held an orientation for new teachers and ed techs joining the district. They had the opportunity to meet one another, learn more about the district, and get acquainted with their new roles. We can’t wait to welcome them back alongside all of our staff this week as we prepare for the new school year and the return of students!

Get ready to kick off the new school year with a full day of family fun, local vendors, interactive activities, FREE school supplies (while supplies last), and more at our Back to School Bash!

📸 Strike a pose! Stop by The Gazebo next to American Eagle for a fun Back to School themed photo shoot with local photographer chaoticccreative -the perfect way to capture those end-of-summer smiles before heading back to the classroom!

🎒 Fill the Backpack | 10AM–12PM or Until Supplies Last
Head to the carpeted hallway leading to Jordan’s Furniture, where all families and students are welcome to pick up FREE school supplies to help get ready for the year ahead. Any remaining supplies will be donated to Maine Needs, helping even more local students start the school year prepared.

🤖 Get hands-on with STEM!
Visit the Best Buy Wing to check out a large interactive display from Maine STEM Coliseum and Learning Center, featuring their LEGO table, robots, and opportunities for kids to explore, build, and discover.

Whether you’re stocking up for school, supporting local businesses, snapping a fun photo, or letting the kids get hands-on with STEM, there will be something for the whole family to enjoy.

✏️ Monday, August 31: First day for Grades 1-12
✏️ Tuesday, September 1: First day for Kindergarten / Kindergarten only early release
✏️ Wednesday, September 2: First day for PreK / Kindergarten only early release
✏️ Thursday-Friday, September 3-4: Full day for all grades

Our Swap Series returns this week! We'll have two opportunities for the Back to School Swap with the first being this Thursday, August 20 at the South Portland Communtiy Center. The second opportunity will be on Tuesday, August 25 at the Redbank Community Center. Both swaps will go from 4pm-7pm.
