Strange times to see my former ambulance partners retiring, but here goes another one. Pictured in the middle (some time ago) our Captain Robb Couture finishes his last shift as the Captain of Engine 48. Congratulations and we're glad you're not going too far!

Before they head out to the service, a couple of SPFD members (almost in their full Class A's) take some time to touch up the floor before Capt. Barnes' arrival. I am humbled to have played a very small role, as did many, many others in the services for Joel. What is both strange and comforting, is that now when I go to a large FD event, I not only see old friends, but new faces who were me many years ago. Students living in the same station that I did, attending the same college programs as me, starting their careers humble and respectful of the traditions of our trade. As much as we love our work, time marches on and a new generation emerges eager to prove themselves. I hope today they saw the same things that I saw and they take to heart what it means to be part of this strange thing we are called to.

It was a cold four weeks, but they made it. Congratulations to our new recruits!

Boy, if I had 25 years to go..... I’d still have a big smile on my face. Welcome to the seven new members of the SPFD.

There has been an evergreen tree in front of the Cash Corner fire station since it was built. The original one was planted under the supervision of Captain (later Deputy Chief) Jack Hayworth. That tree was blown down in a micro burst storm in 1998 (about two weeks after I started my career at the SPFD). This was the original tree's replacement and was planted under the supervision of Captain Tom Haskell. I remember it being about 12' tall when it went in the ground. Sure hope lots of folks enjoy it all lit up!

This year's winner: A 40-foot blue spruce.

Platoon 3 training. It’s not often we get acquired structures to train in. When we do we try to make the most of it. It can be hard on the neighborhood, but your fire department is better because of these kinds of drills. We thank you for putting up with us.
