South River Fire Department

South River Fire Department Welcome to the Official Facebook of the South River Fire Department The South River Fire Department was first organized on February 24, 1896.
(3)

The first firehouse was located on Ferry Street and was occupied by Protection Hook & Ladder Company and Washington Hose Company. Church and school bells were used to alert approximately 70 men who responded to fires with hand-drawn wagons carrying hoses and ladders. In the early 1900s, South River purchased its first motorized fire engine and the two existing companies merged to form Engine Compa

ny #1. The department then moved into the current fire headquarters located on George Street. During the middle of The Great Depression, a small group of men met to form Reliable Fire Company. Only a few years later, the mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters of the firemen joined together to form the Ladies Auxiliary. Over the next 20 years, apparatus were replaced with larger and more advanced vehicles to keep up with the growing population. The alert system used was also upgraded to a call box and air horn system. In 1959, ten men from Engine Company #1 and Reliable Fire Company chartered a third company, Summit Engine Company. It was another 16 years before Summit moved into the “House on the Hill” on Appleby Avenue. The Department has since grown to approximately 100 members, seven apparatus, and three chief’s vehicles. In 2010, we responded to over 600 alarms within our 2.6 square mile borough as well as assisting our neighboring towns.

Our deepest condolences go out to the victims, and their families

We are learning that the individual who was killed yesterday during the assassination attempt in Butler, PA was a former Chief of the "Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company", and that he died shielding his wife and children from the gunfire. His name is Corey Comperatore. Another example of a hero who's life was taken far too soon. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and fellow firefighters in their time of sorrow.

Rest easy hero, we'll take it from here.

This past Saturday South River Fire Department hosted its Annual Chiefs Dinner to celebrate outgoing 2023 Chief, Scott Wolf. With this, we also had other milestones to celebrate. These milestones were the following:

Members of the 50 year club for 2024 include:
Robert Moose Chando 63 years
Charlie Willever – 57 Years
Charles Matts Jr. - 53 Years
Ziggy Bomba – 53 Years
Edward Adamsky – 53 Years
Art Londensky – 52 Years
Tom Swenticky – 52 Years
Steve Kuzmack – 52 Years
John Ruzicki – 52 Years
Stanley Ruzicki – 52 Years
Jim Billerman – 51 Years

Newest members to the 50 Year Club!
Lou Bongiovi Sr.
Bruce Jensen
Paul Migut
Bob Bodak

As a volunteer agency, these milestones are remarkable. Some may no longer be interior firefighters, but they are still around to mentor younger firefighters and pass on their knowledge, expertise, and SRFD tradition.

As a third generation firefighter, I've watched these firefighters pour tremendous time and heart into the department to ensure pride, tradition, and sacrifice carries on. To this day as Chief, I still learn from those part of the 50-Year Club.

Congratulations Ex-Chief Scott Wolf and those who are now part of the 50-Year Club!!!

Thank you for all your time, dedication, and sacrifice!

Stay Safe,

Chief Miller

Good Morning & T.G.I.F.!!

SRFD would like for you all to be aware of Carbon Monoxide (CO). This time of year, we see an increase in alarms that relate to (CO). Please be conscientious of the signs and symptoms of Carbon Monoxide exposure. Carbon Monoxide detectors should be in working order to protect you and your families from this odorless/tasteless gas.

Please review the attached information sheets regarding Carbon Monoxide.

01/14/2024

Happy Sunday All,

January 2024 Department Training:

This morning SRFD participated in Annual Refresher Training and SCBA Refresher. Every year firefighters must complete their annual Bloodborne Pathogens, Right To Know, and Hazmat Refresher Training.

Along with that, firefighters must complete their annual SCBA Refresher/Familiarization. This year the SCBA Refresher/Familiarization required firefighters to don Full PPE (nomex hood, bunker pants, turnout coat, SCBA, facepiece, helmet, gloves, and go on air) in 2-minutes or less. This is known as the 2-minute drill. Fire recruits are required to complete this in the fire academy when they go for their intial firefighter training. As a department, we strive to don Full PPE in 2-minutes or less. Firefighters then had to follow a hose line with zero visibility and get themselves through a low-profile prop (wall breach).

Firefighters did a great job training today! Please understand SRFD is a fully volunteered department. Firefighters take time away from their families, work, hobbies, etc. to train in order to safely and successfully protect life and property within the Borough of South River and its mutual aid municipalities.

Enjoy Your Sunday!

It has come to my attention, and Facebook message inbox, that an incident had happened in South River that people have expressed their disgrace and disappointment. The incident occurred in South River, ONTARIO... NOT South River, New Jersey.

I can confidently say the South River (NEW JERSEY) Fire Department will do the best of their ability to protect all life and property when conditions allow.

Sincerely,

Craig A. Miller
