COUNCIL MEETING RECAP
May 2, 2022
TOPICS
The 2022 Municipal Budget, which you can view on the borough’s website, was the main topic.
TAKEAWAYS
Councilwoman Julie Meira, the lone Democrat on the Council, asked tough questions about the budget and what it is lacking. She pointed out this budget has . . .
NO full-time Business Administrator
NO full-time Construction Official
NO money for roads
NO money for infrastructure or fixing the brown water issues
VOTES
The budget passed 4-2.
Councilwoman Julie Meira (D) - NO
Councilman Jason Oliveira (R) - NO
Councilwoman Donna Balazs (R) - YES
Councilman Peter Guindi (R) - YES
Councilman Jim Gurchensky (R) - YES
Council President Tony Ciulla (R) - YES
Recorded videos of the meeting can be viewed on the borough’s website. Next meeting is Monday, May 23. We encourage the public to attend and speak out on issues.
We know there are a lot of complaints about South River’s downtown. We encourage every South River resident who can to get out tonight at 6:30 at the Middle School Cafetorium for a special meeting of the Planning Board where you will have a chance to voice your input. https://www.southrivernj.org/DocumentCenter/View/1282/May-17th-Main-Street-Revitalization-Discussion-PDF
Kudos to Councilwoman Julie Meira for standing up for the residents of South River. But as the lone Democrat on the Council, she needs more votes to help steer this town in the right direction. That’s why it’s critical to elect Margaret Kenny and Emily Link to Council this year.
Julie’s full comments on her “no” vote on the budget: “This budget was created with no intention to resolve any concerns or issues our borough faces. Zero monies were put into roads or water main infrastructure. Our current road improvements are only done with DOT funds or county roads get improved by the county.
“This administration has also failed to listen to residents and local developers when they expressed the importance of having a full-time qualified construction official. Our construction department is crucial in developing and improving our borough.
“We are lacking the access of inspection availability with only part-time employees. The full-time position has not been filled since 2020. If this administration cared about the future of South River, they would be looking into more funding assistance for infrastructure.”
DEMOCRATS SELECT CANDIDATES FOR 2022
South River, New Jersey, April 26, 2022 — At its most recent committee meeting, the South River Democratic Organization selected its candidates for South River Borough Council for 2022. The committee enthusiastically endorsed Margaret Kenny and Emily Link to run for the two available council seats.
“Margaret and Emily are two strong candidates with integrity who are not afraid to challenge the status quo. They will bring fresh ideas and perspectives on how to make South River a better place to live," said Tele Koukourdelis, Chairman of the South River Democratic Organization. “We are excited to help them get elected to Council where they can contribute to the work of Councilwoman Julie Meira, who is asking tough questions, demanding accountability, and representing the taxpayers’ best interests.”
Margaret Kenny has lived in South River for more than two decades. Since 2010, she has worked as an administrator at Children of America in East Brunswick. A graduate of Middlesex College, Margaret is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from New Jersey City University. Margaret has been an active leader and participant in the South River community for many years. She was a member of the South River Municipal Alliance, a South River Library trustee, PTA president at the South River Middle and High Schools, a South River Recreation baseball coach and advisory board member, a Cub Master for Pack 83, and a member of St. Stephen the Protomartyr Roman Catholic Church. She looks forward to using her experience to be a voice for the people on the South River Council.
Emily Link grew up in Middlesex County and is a homeowner in South River. She works as an Office Services Manager in the Middlesex County Office of Planning. Prior to that, she worked in the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office as a Support Staff Supervisor. She graduated from the University of Hartford with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. She earned her Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from Cambridge University International and has taught English as a second language in Thailand and Vietnam. She is looking forward to listening to the needs and concerns of all South River residents and finding workable solutions to address them.
“We need a team committed to looking out for the best interests of all of our residents and improving their quality of life,” said Chairman Koukourdelis. “We’re confident Margaret Kenny and Emily Link will be great representatives on the Council and be committed and dedicated public servants for all South River residents.”
