Looking for something to do on Wednesday, June 22? I have a suggestion for you. Come to the South River Historical & Preservation Society meeting, starting at 7:00 pm. Why? They're having a Lincoln reenactor come to speak at the meeting about his life, presidency, the civil war and his funeral train. He's bring one of his colonels with him. There will also be light refreshments and there is no charge for this. The meeting is in the Sough River Museum at 64-66 Main Street (The Old School Baptist Church) - across the street from Dunkin Donuts. So spread the word to anyone you think would be interested. Hope to see you then!

Today is Ice Cream Soda Day! What better way to cool off on a hot day. I found a picture of a 7 Up add. My favorite was vanilla ice cream and root beer soda, known as a root beer float. What was your favorite?

Today is the anniversary of D Day - the largest amphibious landing in history, began in the early-morning hours as Allied forces landed in Normandy on the northern coast of France. Operation Overlord took months of planning and involved 1,527,000 soldiers in 47 Allied divisions along with 4,400 ships and landing craft, and 11,000 aircraft. The Germans had about 60 divisions spread along France and the Low Countries. American forces landed on two western beaches, Utah and Omaha, while British and Canadian troops landed farther east on Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. By the end of the day 150,000 Allied soldiers and their accompanying vehicles had landed with 15,000 killed and wounded.

Lots to talk about in June. The first is that we have a new combination display case and magazine rack in the reading room. Currently there are minerals and geodes in display in the case.

Next, if you've wanted to learn how to quilt or take advantage of the hexagon craze, now's your chance! We're offering a two day course to make a pillow. The kit for doing this contains the hexagon templates and fabric to make the Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern and the fabric to applique it on (see below). It's a two week class: on Monday June 20 you receive the kit and learn how to piece the hexagon pattern and on Monday, June 27 you learn how to applique it onto the background fabric and turn it into a pillow. The class meets on 6:00-8:00 pm on both nights, and there's no cost for it.

Last but not least, we're doing the raffle for adults. You get a change to win a basket of goodies each time you take out one or more books. The June basket is for summer sports items and there will be a different basket for July and August. Happy Reading!

Today is pack rat day. There's still time today to keep with the intent of Pack Rat Day by observing the following:

• Don't clean your room, basement, garage or any other area today.
• Don't discard anything today...It may be valuable.
• Don't even empty the trash today. You might have accidentally thrown out something useful.
• Do keep an eye out for useful stuff being discarded by others.
• Do go to garage and rummage sales. They can be pack rat gold mines.
• Do look around your belongings and be thankful for what you have.
• Do spend time thinking of uses for your things. Justification for saving is satisfying.

Good News! Or maybe great news, depending on how you view things. Yesterday was the only Friday the 13th of this year. You're all safe from your trixadexaphobia (the fear of the number 13.) Going back to the Babylonian Code of Hammorabi (circa 1780 BC), the number 13 meant bad luck.

It's School Nurses Day! Everyone has been to see the school nurse at least once in their lives, be it for a genuine illness or just to get a sneaky note to get out of school early. It is easy to forget, though, just how important she is to the well beings of ourselves and our fellow school friends. What would we do when we injure ourselves or are feeling unwell at school without the school nurse and her sick notes? Let your school nurse know that we don’t take her efforts for granted.

This holiday is celebrated all around the world, and pupils and teachers everywhere are given the opportunity to express their gratitude for the love and care the nurses give them on a daily basis. Here’s to those hard working nurses, and to the good health they help bring.
