Today is Presidents’ Day! The holiday to honor all the nation’s leaders began as a means to honor only one. George Washington was always first in the hearts of his countrymen. Unofficial celebrations on his birthday (February 22nd) were common around the nation but no federal proclamation of a holiday came until 1879 when Rutherford B Hayes signed it into law.

A push to expand the holiday beyond Washington began in the 1960s with a drive to give workers more three-day weekends. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 saw the holiday shift from Washington’s actual birthday to the 3rd Monday of the month.

Marketers quickly took hold of the new holiday weekend and included it in their sales pitches focusing it on all the presidents instead. Slowly the shift from honoring Washington to all the presidents was solidified, though the federal government still labels the holiday officially as Washington’s Birthday.

Today is the birthday of Galileo Galilei who was born in Pisa Italy in 1564. Galileo was a key figure in Italian scholarly circles and assisted in performing experiments surrounding falling objects.

His greatest invention was actually the improvement of the telescope, which he found by trial and error copying foreign designs. Eventually this allowed him to observe heavenly bodies more closely including the moon and discover four moons around Jupiter, now named in his honor and helped lend credence to the heliocentric theory proposed by Copernicus.

Galileo ran into trouble as well when his Copernican theories ran afoul of the Church authorities. Inquisition was brought against him, after being warned by the pope to treat Copernicus’s theory only hypothetically. His writings still successfully saw print and even under inquisition he was treated well.

Galileo died in 1642 nearly blind from age. His legacy lives on for many in the fields of physics and astronomy.

Speaking of astronomy, keep watching our events calendar for upcoming information on solar eclipse programming here at the library!

It’s New Jersey Author Judy Blume’s 86th birthday today!

Blume is most known for her realistic children’s novels beginning in 1970 with her famous “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret”. She consistently tackles topics that children may find uncomfortable or difficult to deal with, like puberty or faith and has created characters to help them navigate these difficult periods in their lives.

Blume still writes, but has not published a book since 2015. She is active in campaigning against censorship, especially because her books are consistently challenged. Blume has also won numerous awards for her writing, including the Margaret Edward’s Award from the American Library Association.

A throwback to the library’s construction! This photo was dated September 21st 1978 and shows the skeletal frame of the library building. For contrast, below is a photo taken just yesterday in the same spot!

Of course the biggest change is the addition seen on the right of the modern photo, but the primary library structure remains unchanged!

Fun fact you may not know about your library #1. There is this random photo of Elvis in our circulation office.

Not that we’re all shook up, it’s just that nobody knows what he is doing there. If we can dream a little bit, we like to think that he epitomizes that burning love we get from seeing all the books circulating for our patrons! We can’t help falling in love with all their choices and are always working hard to make sure they’ll never walk alone without something to read.

So if you see him in our circulation office, don’t be cruel and say hello! The King is always watching over the staff hard at work!
