Due to the restrictions in place, we are unable to hold our annual Bicycle Rodeo & Public Safety Day. However, we've come up with an alternative - a Virtual Bicycle Safety Rodeo & Coloring Contest.

As part of this program, children between the ages of 3 and 13 years have the chance to participate in a coloring contest. The first 300 entries received will each receive a coupon for a free treat from one of three local businesses that are partnering with us to sponsor this program. We'll also be giving away 10 brand new bikes to the coloring contest winners.

Between now and June 15th, we'll be posting a series of bicycle safety videos hosted by South River Police Officers on our website and social media pages. The goal is to virtually teach South River's children the bicycle safety lessons they would normally learn about at our annual Bicycle Rodeo & Public Safety Day. Parents are asked to share and watch these videos with their kids. All entries will receive a bicycle safety certificate, indicating the participant has learned the proper safe riding techniques.

To enter the coloring contest, simply print the coloring sheet, have your child color it, and submit it by regular mail or email to the addresses indicated on the sheet. The coloring sheet can be found at www.southriverpd.org/bicycle-safety

CONTEST RULES
1) Entries must be received by Monday, June 15th.
2) This program is open to South River residents only.
3) Do not drop off entries in person.
4) Two bikes will be given away to the winners (1 girl and 1 boy) of each age group.
5) Age groups are 3-4, 5-6, 7-9, 10-11, and 12-13.

Message From South River Mayor John Krenzel
April 29, 2020

Once again it is time to take stock as to where South River is. Much has been happening in South River so I delayed this message from last Sunday.

One of the matters that I have been working on is that of reopening the parks on Friday, May 1st. On Wednesday, Governor Murphy beat me to the punch, opening the state parks. That is alright as I agree that the parks should be reopened and I agree with the Governor that people should practice distancing themselves and wear masks. I believe that the people of South River are mature enough not only to protect themselves but instill in their children the necessity of being careful—not necessarily for the young people but to protect older people that they come in contact with. The high number of positives in the town indicates many do not protect themselves but I have faith in the people that they can get their act together.

Also, on this Friday, the second quarter taxes are due. While the Governor says that, if a town wants to delay payments it is okay to delay payments, the towns still have obligations to meet--like paying the counties their share of the real estate taxes. (Remember real estate taxes are divided up between the town, the school board, and the county) If South River delays payments, there may not be enough money to meet its mid-month obligations to pay the county and the school board and the town workers. And no one wants to go to twice a month garbage pick-up.

Unfortunately, there are passings to report. Last weekend, South River lost its Zoning Officer Glenn Lauritsen because of a tragic accident. He was a good man and will be missed.

As of today, South River has lost four citizens to the virus. South River is approaching 200 known positive cases. Although New Jersey is on the downside of the curve, we must all still be vigilant. As you go out, use common sense. Be aware of your surroundings. Think about other people which is something we should do all the time. By being smart, New Jersey will be able to re-open and we can get on with our new normal lives.

God bless you and God bless South River.

Mayor John Krenzel

There is a false text message circulating throughout the community regarding Homeland Security restrictions and military involvement. It has been determined to have originated through foreign governments whose intention is to negatively impact our response to COVID-19.

There is the possibility, and probability, of additional restrictions as we react and respond to COVID-19. Anything that is posted here will be verified before publishing.

With that in mind, it is important that you not go into information overload. We suggest using a single or minimal numbers of credible news/media sources to obtain information on our community’s response.

We understand it is easy to overreact and not always maintain our composure. But, we as a community have always shown our resilience and determination to directly face adversity. #sayrevillestrong

The South River Police Department invites all community members to join us for "Coffee with a Cop" on Wednesday, February 26th from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Dunkin' Donuts of South River located at 75 Main Street.

Officers from our Department will come together with community members in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee. "Coffee with a Cop" provides a unique opportunity for community members to spend time with officers, ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in South River in a relaxed, informal environment.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. "Coffee with a Cop" breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

"Coffee with a Cop" is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are held across the country as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

A very special thank you to Dunkin' Donuts for graciously opening their doors and allowing us to bring another "Coffee with a Cop" event to the South River community.

Can't make this one? Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and NIXLE for additional "Coffee with a Cop" dates throughout the year.
