Derek came into North Utah Valley Animal Services with a badly injured shoulder. The injury was serious enough that the kindest option was to amputate his leg. Sweet Derek went through his surgery and began his recovery all while living in a shelter, without a home or family of his own to comfort him.

Now Derek is a tripod, but somehow, he doesn’t seem to know that anything is different. He still runs. He still plays. He still throws his whole heart into every bit of attention he gets. He’s strong, energetic, affectionate, and so ready for the next chapter of his life to begin.

Derek is estimated to be just 1 to 3 years old. He has so much life ahead of him, and after everything he has already been through, we would love nothing more than to see him finish healing in a home instead of a shelter kennel.

This sweet boy has already adapted to losing a leg. Now he just needs someone to give him the one thing he’s still missing: a family.

At 7 years old, Mayhem never expected to find himself starting over.

After his owner passed away and family was unable to care for him, this sweet Husky/German Shepherd mix found himself at the shelter. Now he’s waiting for someone to show him that he can have a family again. ❤️

Mayhem can be a little shy when you first meet him, but give him some time to feel comfortable and you’ll discover an absolute lovebug. He gives the gentlest kisses, loves being petted, and would happily sit by your side all day if you let him.

And yes… the Husky genes are STRONG. 😂 Mayhem is a talker, and if he feels like you haven’t been giving him enough attention, he will absolutely be filing a verbal complaint. We think he’d be happiest with someone who is home often or works from home and wants a four-legged coworker.

🐾 Does well with large AND small dogs

💋 Gives the sweetest gentle kisses

Peppa is waiting for her forever home at West Valley City Animal Services, and this adorable, squishy house hippo would love nothing more than to trade shelter life for a couch of her own.

Peppa is about 3 years old and is as sweet as she is cute. She does well with other dogs and has become a favorite of the dog walkers who know her. She can be a little nervous around unfamiliar men at first, but with a little time to feel comfortable, she warms up — and she already loves the male volunteers she’s gotten to know. Her history with cats is currently unknown.

She’d love a family who can give her a little patience while she settles in, plenty of love, and, of course, a cozy spot for this house hippo to lounge.

Sadly, sweet Barry finds himself back with us at the shelter through no fault of his own. 💔

We love having this handsome boy around, but we don’t want the shelter to be his home. Barry deserves a couch, a warm lap, and a person who will love him for the rest of his life.

Barry is a 2–3 year old sweetheart who absolutely LOVES affection. He’s happiest curled up in your lap, soaking up cuddles and reminding you just how much love one little cat can give. 🐈‍⬛❤️

He’s already had his heart set on a home once. Now we’re hoping someone will give him the forever he deserves.

Tomorrow could be the day you meet your new best friend! Shelter Saturday is happening at West Valley Animal Services 💛

If you’ve been thinking about adding a new best friend to your family, this is a great chance to meet some of the dogs and cats currently waiting for homes.

West Valley Animal Services is normally closed on weekends, but this Saturday, August 29, they’re opening their doors from 10 AM to 4 PM for a special adoption event. The shelter is located at 4522 W 3500 S in West Valley City.

Please share and help us get as many of these animals seen — and hopefully adopted — as possible!
