On June 1, 1918, the battle of Belleau Wood began.

The Marines who fought there, cemented a legacy for generations to come. This was the first large-scale battle for the Marines and one that would be seared into the collective memory of the United States Marine Corps. The battle was fierce and raged for more than three weeks, finally coming to an end on June 26, 1918.

The Germans said the Marines fought like devils, calling them "teufel hunden." From that day on, Marines would be forever known as Devil Dogs.

This painting, by artist Franc-Earle Schoonover, shows the Marines’ savage fight for infamous, French woods.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Lee Marvin served with distinction as a United States Marine during World War II, enlisting in 1942 and serving as a scout sniper with the 4th Marine Division through the grueling island-hopping campaigns of the Pacific theater.

This historic photograph captures Private First Class Marvin in Hawaii during a period of rest and reorganization following the intense fighting of the Marshall Islands campaign in February 1944, just months before his military service reached a defining climax during the Battle of Saipan in June 1944.

During that fierce assault, Marvin was severely wounded by enemy fire that severed his sciatic nerve, earning him the Purple Heart and resulting in a medical discharge in 1945 after more than a year of hospitalization carrying the authentic grit and real-world combat experience of a frontline Marine straight into his legendary acting career.
