Fireworks, family cookouts, and backyard celebrations are all part of Independence Day, but please remember that 911 is for emergencies only.

Don't call 911 because:
Your neighbor is setting off fireworks or your Wi-Fi stopped working.

Do call 911 if:
Your brother-in-law now has fewer fingers than he did before lighting fireworks, or someone is showing signs of a stroke, heart attack, or other medical emergency.

Every non-emergency call ties up dispatchers and first responders who may be needed for someone facing a true life-threatening emergency.

If your situation does not involve an immediate threat to life or property, please use your local law enforcement agency's non-emergency number instead.

Good morning, Holler Heathens! It’s Thursday, which means we’re one day closer to the weekend… if the weather, your coworkers, and life in general don’t have other plans. 🤪

Today’s lesson from your friendly neighborhood firefighters: Your grandparents’ house didn’t burn like yours can.

Take a look at the graphic. In the 1970s, a living room often took 20–30+ minutes to reach flashover. Today? It can happen in as little as 3–5 minutes.

So why the huge difference?

🏠 Modern furniture is mostly synthetic.
Couches, mattresses, curtains, and carpets are now made with petroleum-based foams and plastics. They ignite faster, burn much hotter, and release thick, toxic smoke.

🔥 Open floor plans.
That beautiful “kitchen, dining room, living room all in one” design? Fire loves it. More oxygen and fewer walls mean flames spread much faster.

📦 More stuff.
Electronics, lithium-ion batteries, charging devices, plastics, and lightweight engineered wood products all add to the fire load inside your home.

💨 Toxic smoke develops almost immediately.
Most fire fatalities occur from smoke and toxic gases—not burns. You may have only a couple of minutes to escape.

🚨 What does that mean for you?

✅ Test your smoke alarms every month.
✅ Replace batteries as needed and replace alarms every 10 years.
✅ Have an escape plan and practice it with everyone in the house.
✅ Sleep with bedroom doors closed when possible—it can slow heat and smoke from reaching you.
✅ If a fire starts… GET OUT, STAY OUT, and call 911. Don’t go back in for pets, phones, or that Amazon package you forgot to open.

Remember, today’s house fires don’t wait for you to finish your coffee, find your shoes, or convince the teenager it’s “probably nothing.”

We are at an enhanced risk of fires getting out of control again today. Please use EXTREME caution if you have to burn any.

Dry conditions are expected today combined with breezy southwesterly winds gusting to 25 MPH will result in an elevated fire danger his afternoon. A cold front moves through Friday afternoon/evening, accompanied by showers and thunderstorms.

Be aware according to NWS there is an elevated risk for fires getting out of control. Please burn responsibily. Also remember we are still under a burn ban which means no burning 6am-6pm.

According to the NWS in Wilmington, OH...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY THIS EVENING

The combination of dry and breezy conditions are creating elevated
fire danger across parts of south-central and southern Ohio this
afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values will be between 25 to
35 percent with wind gusts from the south between 15 and 20 mph.
Conditions improve early this afternoon as winds decrease. Similar
conditions are expected tomorrow.

Please adhere to any local burn laws that may be in effect for
your area.
