I GROW FASTER THAN YOU

last week when we were seeding the bay with clams we found this pair of friends. This really shows the huge difference in growth speed of clams and oysters. The microscopic oyster settled on a small seed clam and quickly overtook it in size. This pair is now residing at the Southampton High School marine science classroom and the students will continue to watch their development

Good news from our colleagues in East Hampton.

In a decision that East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell called "an enormous win for public access to our beaches," State Supreme Court Justice Ralph Gazzillo has ruled that a group of property owners do not own the 4,000-foot-long strip of ocean beach popularly known as Truck Beach, nor a nea...

RESEEDING THE BAY

Today the Trustees with the help of Cornell Cooperative Extension and Trustee Marine Maintenance staff planted half a million seed clams in Moriches Bay. Under contract, Cornell grew the clams and Trustee Eric Shultz constructed a steel sled with water jets that softened the sand when towed behind our work barge. A boat followed the sled and the clams were spread on the prepared bay bottom . Clams are known to thrive in bay bottoms that are turned over either mechanically or by storm action. Next year just before clams naturally propogate, the Trustees will turn over large portions of the bay utilizing the sled to help ensure maximum survival of larval shellfish. More clams equals cleaner and healthier waters because of their filtering activity

BEFORE AND AFTER

A few years ago we published a picture of old school erosion control showing what was left of old cars that were placed on the beach in front of the Mecox beach club. Thanks to a friend of the trustees we now have a picture of when the vehicles were installed in 1973. Rumor has it that it was found out through trial and error that they only stayed in place if a minimum of 3 were chained together.

FULL MOON PHENOMENON

Thursday night at 6:45 pm thousands of horseshoe crabs will be arriving on the beach at the bay side of Pikes Beach in the village of Westhampton Dunes. Volunteers will be there to tag some of the crabs and Cornell cooperative extension staff will be present to answer questions and instruct the public on the importance of this ancient living fossil. See the crabs emerging from the water to lay their eggs in the sand. This beach is one of the most prolific breeding sites on Long Island

Trustees Victorious in Appeals Court.
Last week the Trustees won a very important case involving the control our funds. We have been waiting over a year for the court to render its decision and we are pleased that the judges took the time to research the issue and reaffirm our status as a distinct and separate body from the Town Board. Here is the decision if you would like to read it yourself. http://www.nycourts.gov/reporter/3dseries/2015/2015_06885.htm

APPEALS by the defendants Fred Havemeyer, William Pell, Jon Semlear, Eric Shultz, and Ed Warner, Jr., individually and in their official capacities as members of the Trustees of the Freeholders and Commonalty of the Town of Southampton, in an action, inter alia, pursuant to General Municipal Law § 5…

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MEETINGS YOU WILL EVER ATTEND

On Friday June 19th at 7:00 PM The Southampton Town Trustees will hold a special meeting at the Southampton High School at 141 Narrow lane in Southampton.

Many of you are aware that the Trustees have experienced a legal setback in the regulation and management of the ocean beach. At our last meeting over 200 people showed up on a Monday afternoon to voice their support for the Trustees and anger at the recent judicial decision hindering the Board's regulation of the ocean beaches. Due to the limited space at Town Hall, not everyone had the opportunity to speak We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support and we would like to extend an invitation for you to speak your mind on this very important issue at a larger forum. The recent court decision will seriously affect the Trustees ability to preserve YOUR beaches and your right to use them. Comments are always welcomed but also it is important to fill the room to show everyone how important this issue is to the residents of Southampton. Please tell everyone they must attend and send a loud and clear message.
