Come visit the library’s new aquarium, where we have a few schools of tropical fish!

Did you know that schooling is when fish coordinate their swimming in order to avoid being eaten by predators by confusing them? They can also move around without expending as much energy since they become more hydrodynamic while schooling. Meanwhile, shoaling is when a group of fish stick together but tend to do their own foraging and swimming patterns.

The tetras in our tank are a type of shoaling fish, and only truly school when they’re threatened, like when they remember that school starts in less than a month, and they still haven’t gotten their summer reading book from the library.
