The Southaven Police Department is sad to announce the passing of one of our retired police service dogs. Ziggy, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, passed away on Saturday, May 16th, 2026, in the company of his former handler and family. Ziggy honorably served the Southaven Police Department as a Patrol and Explosive Detection K-9 from 2018-2024. During that time, Ziggy developed a reputation for his speed, strength, and ferocity while successfully finding and apprehending numerous criminals. In addition to this, prior to his time at the Southaven Police Department, Ziggy served as a Military Working Dog with the Army Ranger Battalion. In addition to serving the City of Southaven at a high level for many years, Ziggy was also utilized in mutual aid capacities for explosive sweeps within Desoto County whenever called upon to do so by surrounding agencies. After retirement, Ziggy spent the remainder of his days at home with his former handler and family.
One of Ziggy's most notable incidents was on the evening of August 7th, 2020, when Ziggy was responsible for tracking down three individuals that had fled on foot from a stolen vehicle. In addition to this, the suspects were armed and responsible for several auto burglaries within an apartment complex in Southaven that had just occurred. Within an hour time frame, Ziggy had successfully tracked to all three individuals and apprehended two of the three. The third individual surrendered without incident. This is just one example of the unbelievable service and dedication that Ziggy displayed for the City of Southaven.
Ziggy was an outstanding canine who was loved by many within the Southaven Police Department and left a lasting impact on everyone that he was around. We ask that you keep his handler and family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.
