At Falconi Energy, we pride ourselves on delivering to our customers with professionalism and expedience. Currently, our region is covered with over a foot of snow remaining from 3 weeks ago. Another storm is expected to drop another foot of snow this Sunday night. In order to make sure we can keep up with the demand for deliveries in this cold weather, we need the help of our customers to do your best to shovel a path for our drivers and clear out any gates they may have to open to make their deliveries.

We have a fantastic crew of drivers and service techs that have been trudging through these conditions for the past 3 weeks to keep our customers warm. They deserve all the help they can get.

If you have heat pumps or mini split heat pumps that you’re currently using to heat your home Turn them OFF, and use your safe and reliable oil heat system. At these temperatures all these heat pumps will do is run up your electric bill! In these temperatures they cost more to operate than the equivalent oil heating system. The output temperatures will be lower and you will struggle to maintain temperature. Even if you have a heat pump system rated for low outdoor temperatures their efficiency drops off dramatically in this weather.

Also if you have a forced hot water heating system with radiators, baseboards, or air handlers remember that by running the heat pumps and letting these systems sit idle you risk freezing the pipes if they are in precarious locations where they may be exposed to cold drafts, are on outside walls, or are in an unheated attic. We’ve seen many frozen and burst pipes caused by hot water heating systems left idle because the homeowner has been mislead to believe their heat pump is the more efficient choice!

In this temporary cold spell it’s important to NOT turn your thermostats down at all. The outdoor temperatures are at or below what your system is designed to handle for our area. If you turn your thermostat down a few degrees at night or while you’re out of the house the temperature will not come back up until the weather moderates. If you have programmable thermostats set them at your desired temperature, press hold, and leave them there…. If you have the NEST, Ecobee, or other “Smart” thermostats beware of their ability to turn the heat down automatically when you leave the home, we’ve seen many frozen pipes caused by this supposedly “Smart” feature.

Bit of a long post but if you don’t want to be taken advantage of by the utility companies it’s worth the read…

Don’t be fooled by the false propaganda tricking you into switching from oil or gas heat to a heat pump system. They’ll entice you by offering large rebates and promises of energy savings and a cleaner environment. It’s all half truths.

First some basic info and numbers

In basic terms A BTU is a measure of heat energy.

A gallon of heating oil contains 138,500 BTU’s

A kilowatt of electricity contains 3412 BTU’s

If you do simple math it takes 40.59 Kilowatts to equal a gallon of oil. 138,500 divided by 3412)

The average retail price of heating oil today is $3.39 per gallon

The price for a kilowatt for my house which I used for this lesson is 17-1/2 cents however you must also add in all the extra charges they add into your electric bill such as customer charge, distribution charge, transition charge, and so on! About 10 additional charges in total and then divide your total electric bill dollar amount by the total amount of kilowatts used. So my electric bill for the month was $368.95 and I used 960 kWh which works out to 38 cents per kilowatt hour.

40.59 kilowatt hours (the amount equal to 1 gallon of oil) multiplied by 38 cents equals $15.42, which is 4-1/2 times the price of a gallon of oil! Now even if you want to ignore all the extra charges and just use the straight kWh rate, mine is 17-1/2 cents, multiply that by 40.59 again and we have $7.10 to equal a gallon of heating oil, stil over double the price!

Don’t be fooled, remember programs like Mass Save are being run by the utilities like Nat Grid and Eversource, the providers of that electricity. Remember the old saying “The fox guarding the hen house”

They also use the tactic of saying heat pumps are a cleaner heat, remember though that electricity if primarily generated by coal, oil, and natural gas. Despite what they may try to have you believe, solar and wind are only make up a very small fraction of electricity generation.
