The Southbridge Police Department is announcing that we are suspending the use of FLOCK automated license plate reader technology in our community. After working with our Town Manager and elected officials, we believe this is the responsible approach at this time.
Since the FLOCK cameras were installed earlier this year, they have not been used by our officers for any investigative or enforcement purpose. While we believe automated license plate reader technology can be an effective law enforcement tool when properly governed, we also recognize that public trust and confidence must come first. We have heard the concerns raised by members of our community, and we believe the responsible approach is to take a step back and allow for greater public understanding and discussion regarding the technology, its safeguards, data retention, access, security, privacy protections and appropriate oversight.
For that reason, we are moving forward with suspending our agreement with FLOCK. Until broader concerns are addressed and appropriate statewide guardrails are established, our department will not pursue implementation of FLOCK or similar technology.
For many years, we have worked hard to build strong relationships and establish trust with the people we serve. That trust is one of our department’s most important assets and we are not willing to jeopardize the good work that has been done over the years because of any one piece of technology. No camera system or investigative tool is more important than the confidence our community places in us.
Our commitment will always remain the same and we will continue to use appropriate tools to protect our community while maintaining the trust and confidence of the residents we serve. We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to ask questions and share their concerns. We will continue to listen, engage with our community and keep public trust at the center of our decisions.
