OFFICER BITTEN BY DOG DURING ARREST

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers responded to an apartment at 301 Main Street in Southbridge, MA to investigate the report of a disturbance involving neighbors.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the reporting party and subsequently contacted the individual causing the disturbance who was identified as Nina DUPUIS.

Despite repeated requests and warnings to stop yelling and disturbing other residents, DUPUIS continued her disruptive behavior. Officers attempted to place DUPUIS under arrest, at which point a dog inside her apartment bit one of our officers on the hand and leg. The dog also bit DUPUIS and attempted to lunge at another officer before officers were able to secure the animal inside the apartment.

Officers were eventually able to place DUPUIS under arrest and transport her to police headquarters. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later released.

37-year-old Nina L. DUPUIS of 301 Main Street apt #209 in Southbridge, MA was arrested on scene and charged with disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct.

DUPUIS was held on cash bail and was arraigned in Dudley District Court on Tuesday 10/13/26.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Today, I had the distinct honor of attending the 43rd annual George L. Hanna Awards for Bravery Ceremony at the Massachusetts State House in Boston, alongside the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association Executive Director Mike Bradley, to recognize the extraordinary men and women who represent the very best of our profession. This year, the Commonwealth recognized officers from the Boston, Burlington, Everett, Fall River, and Holyoke Police Departments.

It was a privilege to serve on the selection committee and play a role in recognizing the recipients of the most prestigious award in Massachusetts law enforcement. These officers exemplify courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others, often placing themselves in harm’s way to save lives.

Ceremonies like today’s remind me how fortunate we are to have such outstanding men and women in our profession, including the incredible officers who serve our community every single day. It is a privilege to serve alongside these professionals and to be part of a profession that makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Congratulations to all this year’s recipients. Thank you for your bravery, your sacrifice, and for representing the very best of law enforcement.

Annual Fi****ms Training Complete!

Last week our officers completed their annual fi****ms training, along with blocks of active threat and defensive tactics trainings, continuing their commitment to maintaining the highest levels of proficiency, safety, and professionalism.

We are fortunate to have some of the best fi****ms instructors in the business along with a group of outstanding officers who take their training seriously. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to continuous improvement make our department stronger and our community safer.

A big thank-you to our instructors Sergeant Fahey, Sergeant Bonadies, Officer Berquist & Officer Delgado for the time, knowledge, and effort they put into ensuring our officers receive the very best training possible. We are lucky to have such a talented group of instructors and officers working together!️

We would also like to thank our DPW for their help getting our fi****ms training range ready. We appreciate their hard work, support, and willingness to lend a hand to help ensure our officers have a safe and prepared facility to train. Thank you, DPW, for all you do!

PRESS RELEASE

On Thursday, October 1, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., detectives, patrol officers, and K9 “Vice” executed a narcotics-related search warrant at 28 Harding Court, Apartment 3, in Southbridge, Massachusetts.

As a result of the search, officers recovered more than 649 grams of suspected co***ne packaged for distribution, an amount of fentanyl, a device known as a “kilo press,” commonly used by drug traffickers to compact loose powder narcotics into one-kilogram blocks, and other paraphernalia commonly used in the packaging and distribution of narcotics.

As a result of this investigation, the following individual was arrested:

Jerard R. RICE, 31, of 28 Harding Court, Apartment 3, Southbridge, Massachusetts, was charged with trafficking co***ne over 200 grams and possession of a Class A substance (fentanyl).

Rice was transported to police headquarters and held without bail due to a probation violation stemming from his arrest. He was arraigned in Dudley District Court on Friday, October 2, 2026.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Today, police chiefs from around the Commonwealth joined together for our association’s annual Charity Walk benefiting The Jimmy Fund in Boston.

The Jimmy Fund has been the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association’s primary charity since 1953, and since 1989, police chiefs from across the state have come together for this annual walk. Over the years, our association and its members have proudly raised more than $3 million to support The Jimmy Fund and children and families facing cancer.

For us, this truly is the best day of the year. It is a day when police chiefs (active & retired) from across Massachusetts come together, not as chiefs or departments, but as one law enforcement family united behind an incredible cause.

This year, our Hero Match was for Connor, making today’s walk especially meaningful. We are honored to walk in support of Connor, his family, and all the children and families facing the challenges of cancer.

We are proud to continue this incredible tradition of coming together, giving back, and making a difference.

PRESS RELEASE

On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at approximately 10:40am Detectives, patrol officers and our K9 “Vice” executed a search warrant for narcotics at 63 Highland Street in Southbridge, MA.

As a result of the search, more than 214 grams of suspected co***ne, an amount of Adderall, Psilocybin/mushroom edibles, Sildenafil and Ecstasy/M**A (all packaged for distribution), a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver, numerous rounds of live am******on and a digital scale commonly used for the distribution of narcotics were recovered along with other packaging paraphernalia and $1,752 in US currency suspected to be drug proceeds.

As a result of this investigation the following were arrested:

-37-year-old Kenneth T. MASSEY Jr. of 63 Highland Street in Southbridge, MA was charged with trafficking co***ne over 200 grams, possession with intent to distribute Class B Adderall, possession with intent to distribute class C Psilocybin, possession of Class E Sildenafil, possession of Class B Ecstasy (M**A), possession of a fi***rm without an LTC/FID, unlawful possession of am******on and with improper storage of a fi***rm.

-31-year-old Ashley M. RIVERA of 63 Highland Street in Southbridge, MA was charged with trafficking co***ne over 200 grams, possession with intent to distribute Class B Adderall, possession with intent to distribute Class C Psilocybin, possession of Class B Ecstasy (M**A), possession of a fi***rm without an LTC/FID, unlawful possession of am******on and with improper storage of a fi***rm.

Both were transported to police headquarters pending their arraignment in Dudley District Court.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This past weekend, Officer Chatzopoulos and his K9 "Vice" had the opportunity to compete at the the 34th Annual Connecticut Police K-9 Olympics in Enfield, Connecticut. We are pleased to report that they finished in the top 10 out of all competitors.

K-9 teams from throughout New England came together to showcase the incredible training, discipline and teamwork that goes into being a police K-9 team.

The competition featured agility and obstacle courses, obedience, and criminal apprehension demonstrations. It was a great opportunity to see these highly trained teams in action, connect with fellow law enforcement professionals and recognize the important work these K-9s and their handlers do every day.

Congratulations to Officer Chatzopoulos and K9 "Vice" and thank you for helping to keep our town safe. Keep up the great work!

What a GREAT day at Autumnfest & Unity in the Community!
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out on Saturday, visited the booths, grabbed some free pizza and ice cream, checked out the police and fire equipment, watched the demonstrations, and most importantly spent the day together with our officers as a community!

We are incredibly grateful to all of the amazing vendors, organizations and community partners who joined us and helped make the day so much fun. Events like this simply would not happen without your support!

A special THANK YOU to:
*Southbridge Credit Union (SCU) for helping make the free pizza and ice cream possible
*Big Bunny Market for donating water and paper products
*Pizza Chef for providing 30 party sized pizzas (700 slices served to kids and adults throughout the day)
*Suzy Q’s Ice Cream for more than 300 great treats for our kids

And to all of our officers, K9 Vice, K9 Tatumn, one of our drone operators and maintenance staff who volunteered to help out we THANK YOU! You put in a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to make the day happen and we appreciate every one of you.

It has been a true honor to work alongside Chief Michael Befford from the Spencer Police Department over the years, both as a fellow Police Chief and as a colleague within the Massachusetts law enforcement community.

As he begins his retirement, I want to thank him for more than 40 years of dedicated service to law enforcement, his community and the profession we are all proud to be a part of.

On behalf of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Southbridge Police Department and personally, I want to thank Chief Befford for his leadership, friendship and commitment to supporting his fellow chiefs and the law enforcement profession. While we will certainly miss having him as a Chief and colleague, he has earned this next chapter.

Congratulations on your retirement, Chief Befford! Wishing you and your family good health & happiness. Thank you for your service, your leadership and your friendship. Best wishes in retirement!
