🚭🔥 PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE 🔥🚭

Over the past several weeks, the Southbridge Fire Department has seen an increase in fires and hazardous situations caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials throughout the community.
Discarded ci******es and smoking materials continue to be a leading cause of mulch fires, brush fires, and even structure fires. With warmer weather and dry conditions, even a small ember can quickly ignite and spread.

Please help keep our community safe by:
â–ª Properly extinguishing ci******es and ci**rs
â–ª Using proper ashtrays or non-combustible containers
â–ª Never throwing smoking materials from vehicles
â–ª Never discarding ci******es into mulch beds, flower pots, wooded areas, or dry grass
â–ª Ensuring smoking materials are completely out before placing them in trash containers

A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a devastating fire.

Thank you for doing your part to protect our neighborhoods, homes, and first responders.

Today, as the rain steadily came down across Southbridge, members of the Southbridge Fire Department proudly marched in formation to Oak Ridge Cemetery as part of our annual Memorial Day tradition before the town ceremonies began.
At the cemetery stands the Southbridge Firefighters Memorial, a tribute to the members of our department who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and a place where we also remember those members we have lost throughout the years.
We honor:
• Michael J. Blanchard — Line of Duty Death, December 5, 1983
• Lawrence C. Lavigueur — Line of Duty Death, March 31, 1995
• Elmer J. Hicks — Line of Duty Death, June 7, 2003
Additionally, we held a moment of silence in remembrance of Lt. Roland Laroche, who passed away this past year.
Although the heaviest rain arrived right at 9:00 AM, the ceremony continued with pride, tradition, and yes, some very wet uniforms. Today’s remembrance was completed with honor and style.

We also ask our community to remember to treat EMS providers with kindness and respect. Their job is not easy, and they are there to help people during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Thank you to all EMS professionals for everything you do each and every day.

• Dispose of trash properly, do not allow it to accumulate or overflow
• Use candles and open flames with caution, never leave them unattended
• Stay in the kitchen while cooking
• Never discard ashes or smoking materials in potted plants
• Fully extinguish ci******es every time, do not walk away from them
• Douse ashes and cigarette butts with water before disposal
• Avoid overloading outlets, power strips, or extension cords
• Use only safety-listed electrical devices (UL or ETL listed)
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly
• Keep a fire extinguisher accessible in your home
