At a Town Meeting last evening town residents voted to approve a transfer of ARPA funds that had been earmarked for a splash pad toward park improvements. On its merits, that might make sense in many ways and hopefully generations of Southbury youth will have a chance to enjoy these upgrades.
Republicans voiced concerns about the manner in which we got to last night. Originally, the democrat members of the Board didn't feel that they wanted nor needed input from residents to affect the transfer. Selectman Van Stone repeatedly advised the First Selectman that given the amount of the transfer, a Town Meeting was required. After weeks of silence, the First Selectman finally relented and rescinded the original vote and called a town meeting.
In the weeks leading up to the Town Meeting Selectman Holly Sullivan kept asking questions about details of the project that had been withheld such as costs, plans, and timeliness.
Her questions prompted answers from the First Selectman that turned out to be outright falsehoods. He claimed that the total project would only cost $90k. He had to be corrected by a gentlemen in the crowd that the quote he was referring to only included ONE park and that the true cost would be around 180k. Read that last sentence again, some guy in the crowd had to clue him in that he had been misinforming everyone for weeks.
Thus far this new administration has left a lot to be desired. Luckily we have 2 fighters (and some guy in the crowd) trying to keep them honest.
If you think that Southbury deserves better, we welcome you to get involved!
