Natalie Rua and Shaurya Kundu have been named the Southbury winners in the 2025 Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Recognition Program. Both are students at the Pomperaug Elementary School. Natalie is in 4th grade, and Shaurya is in 5th grade. On Monday, January 5th, the Southbury Fire Marshal, Derrek Guertin, presented the winners with a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble and a Southbury Fire Marshal’s challenge coin. The winning posters move on to the next round of judging at the county level.

The annual Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Recognition Program is a collaboration of the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association, Office of the State Fire Marshal, The Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association, The Connecticut State Board of Education, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Connecticut FAIR Plan (representing the insurance industry). The poster contest is open to students in the 4th and 5th grades and aims to educate children on fire prevention.

Congratulations to the local winners, and appreciation to all the students who submitted posters for the contest, as well as to their teachers who assisted them with the project.

Lithium-ion batteries – used in smart phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, and more – can overheat, catch fire or explode if not used correctly.

Only use the battery and charging cord that came with the device, and do not charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, on a couch or any soft surface.

Last evening we responded to a fire alarm activation. The caller shared with the dispatcher that it was sounding because of a cooking mishap.

Unfortunately that mishap resulted in one party who suffered what seems like minor burns but did necessitate a trip to the hospital. The kitchen was covered in a lot of smoke stains, but the people can easily stay there.

A year ago next week we had a similar type fire. That fire did not have any injuries but it did sustain more damage and could not be occupied.

Both incidents involved a burning pan of cooking oil. Both incidents involved someone moving the pot of burning oil.

PLEASE take a look at the tip sheet below in cooking fire safety.

Wishing all a festive, joyous and Fire safe holiday season!!
