🇺🇸 A historic moment for the Town of Southern Pines.

This morning, members of the Southern Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard raised the American flag, North Carolina flag, and Town of Southern Pines flag at our new Town Hall for the very first time.

This milestone would not have been possible without the vision, dedication, and hard work of many people over many years. A special thank you to our Town Council, Town leadership, and staff members across multiple departments who helped bring this project from concept to reality.

Thank you to our Honor Guard members for helping mark this meaningful milestone in our Town’s history. ❤️🤍💙

Today, we proudly celebrated the official dedication and unveiling of the new signs for J. Pleasant Hines Park and the Joe R. Wynn Pool & Splash Pad — honoring two men whose impact helped shape our community.

J. Pleasant Hines was a respected community leader and advocate who was elected as the first Mayor of incorporated West Southern Pines in 1923. His legacy continues to inspire and many of his descendants still live in our community, actively contributing in their own ways.

Joe R. Wynn was best known and loved for his dedication to our community’s youth. He was a basketball coach at West Southern Pines HS and spent his summers working at the pool that’s now named in his honor. Many local residents fondly recall that Mr. Wynn taught them to swim or trained them as lifeguards.

While of different eras, both men helped create opportunities and experiences that enriched the lives of countless residents and families and their legacies are very much felt even decades later.

It was a special morning as community members, Town leaders, and — most importantly — descendants of both families shared in this recognition and ensured these stories continue to be remembered and celebrated.

“We respect and celebrate the diverse heritage and people in our community.” It’s the Southern Pines Way.
