Southern Pines Police Department

Southern Pines Police Department Law Enforcement Agency As we are in our second century of service, we recognize and respect those tragedies of our early past.

From the Town of Southern Pines’ quiet beginnings on March 7th, 1887, with a population of fifty and in a time when the only law and order was a Justice of the Peace, the Southern Pines Police Department has emerged into what it is today: a modern, self-sufficient, full service law enforcement organization that is a model for others to emulate. The early portions of our department’s history were m

arred by some tragedies and included the presence of two departments (Southern Pines and West Southern Pines). Since then, our Police Department has progressively evolved by bringing technological advances to the forefront, providing highly qualified personnel who promote an efficient, well-run organization while maintaining strong ties that we share with the community we serve. As the evolution of our department has progressed from that first car, that first radio, that first computer, our proudest accomplishments have come from bringing in unique and knowledgeable people into our family, providing them the opportunities and training few departments our size can match, and meeting the needs and experiencing the successes our department exhibits today. We have always worked with our community and the citizens, and continue to do so, through our emphasis on the importance of relationships and with ongoing community outreach programs. In doing so we continue to strive to learn and grow in the present and to have those that will follow us in the future will be proud of our efforts and dedication we put forth today. The Southern Pines Police Department serves a community of approximately 17,400 citizens. The department consists of approximately 55 sworn, non-sworn and volunteer personnel, all of whom are dedicated to the enforcement of law and improving the quality of life in the Town of Southern Pines through a dedicated focus on public safety.

🚴‍♂️ Parents: Is Your Child’s E-Bike Legal? 🚴‍♀️

Many police departments across the state have recently seen an influx of calls related to e-bikes and electric mopeds/motorcycles. Please take a moment to make sure your child’s ride is legal and safe.

Not every “e-bike” is considered a bicycle under North Carolina law.

👉 If it has a motor over 750 watts, can go faster than 20 mph on motor power alone, or does not have pedals, it could be considered a moped. If it travels greater than 30 mph it could be considered a motorcycle.

That means:
✅ A driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement is required
✅ Registration, insurance, and inspection are required
✅ Riding is limited to streets only (no sidewalks, bike lanes, or greenways)
✅ Violations can result in charges

👨‍👩‍👧 Parent Tips:
• No pedals = moped/motorcycle
• Check your child’s bike motor wattage and top speed
• Require helmets every ride
• Talk with your kids about the rules of the road
Your child’s safety and your family’s responsibility start with knowing the law. (G.S. 20-4.01(7a), (23), (49))

Today, May 15, is National Peace Officers Memorial Day. During National Police Week, the Southern Pines Police Department remembers and honors the officers from our agency who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. 💙🖤

“I realize this is probably not said enough, but the work our police officers and civilian staff do every day is nothing short of admirable. Every day you put the badge on and come to work can be a day you never go home. We know this and accept that as part of the job. You represent the definition of selfless service to others.”-Chief Polidori

Today, we especially remember:
• Lieutenant Stanley Klingenschmidt
• Detective Charles Harris
• Chief Charles Newton
• Chief Jasper Gargis
• Chief Ben Beasley
• Chief Joseph Kelly
Their sacrifice, courage, and service to the Southern Pines community will never be forgotten.

In North Carolina, the Move Over Law requires drivers to move over a lane — or slow down significantly if changing lanes isn’t possible — for law enforcement, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility crews, and other stopped roadside workers with flashing lights. The Southern Pines Police Department is proud to participate in this statewide effort to raise awareness about North Carolina’s Move Over Law. A few seconds of caution can prevent a tragedy. Stay alert, avoid distractions, and give roadside workers the space they need to get home safely. 💙
