Red flags are out today! Stay safe and stay out of the water!

Based on ocean rescue agency reports of multiple rescues NWS has raised the rip current risk to HIGH making it a RED FLAG DAY for ALL AREA BEACHES from Duck to Hatteras.

Ocean swimming is not recommended, please stay out of the water!

Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of low tide, which was at 8:45 am with the next low around 10:00 pm this evening.

Expect mostly sunny today with high temperatures around 90. South winds around 5-10 mph. Surf height around 2 to 3 feet. Water temperature at Duck Pier is 71.

Always swim near a lifeguard. If help is needed, know your location and call 911!

Don't know what the flags mean? Visit www.lovethebeachrespecttheocean.com for more information on the flags and how to be safe at the beach.

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day from the Southern Shores Police Department! 🇺🇸

Today, as we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of those who fought for our nation’s freedom. Their legacy reminds us of the values that continue to unite us—liberty, service, and community.

Whether you’re enjoying time on the beach, watching fireworks, traveling, or gathering with family and friends, we encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and safely.

Here are a few reminders for a safe holiday:
🎆 Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible.
🚗 Never drive impaired—designate a sober driver or use a rideshare.
🌊 Stay aware of ocean conditions and supervise children near the water.
🚤 Practice safe boating and always wear a life jacket.
❤️ Be courteous, patient, and look out for your neighbors and visitors.

From all of us at the Southern Shores Police Department, thank you for allowing us to serve this incredible community. We are proud to stand beside you as we celebrate 250 years of American independence.

Have a safe, memorable, and Happy Independence Day!

🇺🇸 God Bless Southern Shores, and God Bless the United States of America. 🇺🇸
